There has been major demonstrations with several thousand participants in part of Morocco the last 6 months.
Zeffzani the protest leader in Al-hoceima got arrested yesterday on charges of obstructing freedom of worship in Mohammed V mosque, al-hoceima he was arrested after four days on the run. As reported by many major news outlets.
Now let's back up a little, why are they protesting?
The protests started last October when a fishmonger in Al-hoceima got a swordfish seized because it was out of season and he wouldn't pay the policemen a bribe. They tossed the fish into a nearby garbage truck, the fishmonger then tried to take the swordfish out of the garbage truck. Not an unormal situation in a region we'll known for its corruption. But what happened next is what set the minds of many Moroccans on fire was that the police officers then shouted to the garbage truck driver "crush him" and so he did. And another family was left without their only real source of income.
The "Makzhen"
The makzhen of Morocco is governmental appointees, religious workers funded by the state, and the elite which always needs their bribes, but never have to pay them themselves. Some places you can see the "makzhen degrading the "underclass" but mostly it is the loss of dignity they have when they have to constantly bow down to the Makzhen and beg for crumbs of the opportunitys the especially rifi populations feel as entitled too.
There has not been big scale demonstrations in Morocco simce the arabic spring when king Mohammed VI loosened up government and promised more transparency.
The rif region north-east towards Algeria has been the source of hard rebellions against former colonies and ancient kingdoms before. It will be with great interest too see what the king will do, when his main portion of forces are held up to protect the fragile peace of western-Sahara.
