It's official! Austin Petersen has not only officially announced that he's running for US Senate in the State of Missouri, but he also dropped the bomb that he's running as a Republican.
In his email to his supporters from his run for the Libertarian Party nomination, Mr. Petersen wrote today:
I wanted you to be the first to know: I’m running for the United States Senate here in my home state of Missouri — and I will be running as a Republican!
After running on repeated promises of minimizing government and ending federal micromanagement of American lives, Republicans have constantly shown themselves unable to pass any substantive reforms — it’s business as usual.
Missourians — and indeed all Americans — deserve better than this. We deserve a government that faithfully represents us, not one that favors lobbyists and special interests. We deserve a government that pushes for real reform, not one that accepts milquetoast, watered-down solutions. Above all, we deserve a government that trusts us to manage our own health care, our own religion, our own finances, and our own lives.
So today, I’m announcing my candidacy for US Senate.

I, for one, think he made the right choice. Currently, he is the only strong candidate to announce their intention to take away the seat from Democrat Claire McCaskill.
I listened to Mr. Petersen speak a lot during the lead up to the LP Convention in 2016 and it will be interesting to see him in a debate outside of just having other libertarians on the stage with him. He's a good speaker and if he's been actively working on getting better then he should give Ms McCaskill a run for her money.
It will be interesting to see if any other Republicans decide to challenge him in the primaries. I'm sure the Republican Party has someone they will try to throw out there to keep Mr. Petersen from going to the general.
Can't wait to see how this one plays out! It doesn't matter to me what party someone belongs to as long as they are talking the language of liberty. It would certainly be awesome to see him on the Senate floor standing with Rand for liberty!
