Barbados has recently become the world's newest republic after they officially cut ties with Queen Elizabeth and removed her as head of state.
A ceremony was held to mark the move and they installed governor general Dame Sandra Mason as the president of the region. The celebration comes 55 years after Barbados gained full independence.
Barbados making the move to cut ties and become the newest republic is the first time this has taken place in 3 decades.
Mason gave a speech suggesting that Barbados has now set sail on her "maiden voyage" by declaring itself a republic. And those who could understand the value in why Barbados might seek such sovereignty and to cut ties with such influence should also understand why individuals on their own too might seek the same sovereignty and liberty.
Officials in Barbados want the freedom to forge their own path for the country but they don't extend that freedom to the people in the region to do the same.
Mason has become the country's first president and though they might have removed the Queen as head of state they will still remain in the Commonwealth.
This move for Barbados was one celebrated as a move for freedom and for the region it was but freedom can still be extended further to the point of each individual being free to live peacefully without infringement and violation of consent from others, no matter how good the intentions might be.
Let's see independence and freedom for all individuals and not just those at the top.
