It looks like DNA kits are going to be sent out to parents in Texas for kids in various school districts and open-enrollment charter schools, so that the DNA kits can potentially be used to identify their bodies in case of an emergency.
It is because of previously passed legislation that the kits are being sent out to parents. This comes after a number of deadly shootings in the US which have prompted communities to think of measures like this but also look to things like increased security measures and bulletproof backpacks.
Parents will start to see those tests coming in the next few weeks.
However, it looks like even though they are going to be sent out they allegedly won't be mandatory to collect the DNA. Some parents have already voiced concern over the issue of the kits being sent out suggesting that it demonstrates the failure of the state to adequately address the issue of potential violence in schools.
“This sends two messages: The first is that the government is not going to do anything to solve the problem. This is their way of telling us that,”
Sales of things like bulletproof backpacks are on the rise as parents look to take whatever measures they can to try and protect their families.
School safety concerns have also been helping to fuel more interest for homeschooling as well. Safety is just one of the many reasons that families around the country have decided to pull their kids out and seek better and safer opportunities for them to pursue education elsewhere.
