Both Sacramento city and the city police department are facing a lawsuit over protest related public records requests.
The lawsuit alleges that authorities might be withholding information about public protests and it was reportedly launched by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area and they say that they have been waiting too long for the city to respond to their public records request.
It's reported that they've been waiting at least 10 months for that information and they say that the public has a right to that information without having to wait so many months.
It's argued that the California Public Records Act requires agencies to respond to a public record request within a matter of days, not months.
Why is there such a lag on getting that information out when it is requested? This isn't the first time that someone has had difficulty making such a request.
10 months is too long
When there is clarification that details how information is supposed to be released within days then it seems unjustified for it to take months when such a request is made. That is where this fight is coming from now as they are looking for an answer on that information from the city and PD.
Cities around the US have spent millions essentially helping to keep public records secret, as there are multiple lawsuits that have been launched after people sued the city for withholding one record or another.
The ACLU, different civil liberties union organizations, and others, have sued the police and/or city in areas like Massachusetts, California, New York, and other regions, over that information which is supposed to be available to the people but has been withheld in one circumstance or another.
