Gov. Ron DeSantis has pushed forward in signing a bill that would require more employers to use E-Verify but some are worried that this could be a sort of trojan horse that could impact many in the future, giving the power to close employment opportunities to more than just undocumented immigrants for example.
This system has been used for a number of years now, it is one that enables employers to verify that their employees are authorized to work in the United States.
DeSantis has already signed off on the move to use this system and it comes when many people are once again focusing on the many individuals who are recently seeking to cross the border.
Some have argued that this is a necessary step to boost border security while others worry about the implications that it might have in the future, as well as the concerns over limiting operation freedom for businesses too.
Legislation in FL for example could require more employers of a certain size to use the system whether they want to or not. Critics are already worried about the implications this could have on industries such as the agriculture sector in the country. What impact could this have on FL businesses and other individuals in the future?
Will this be expanded even further down the road? Meanwhile, those who have been paying attention to the border say that it is a necessary step in broadening security. Requiring businesses to use the system to check for employees isn't all the bill is offering either, there are other stipulations surrounding penalties for those transporting undocumented immigrants into the state as well, along with other changes. Previously, DeSantis had signed E-Verify into law but it related to public employers and those who had been contracted with the state as well to use it. Now it is going to step further into the private business arena. This clearly limits employer freedom and therefore individual freedom just the same, though it is one that is widely supported by legislators and others. That doesn't mean they haven't had some political pushback on it though from the other side. The bill making these changes has also been referred to by those critics as an "anti-immigration bill" and was just signed by DeSantis this week.
