One of the most perplexing shifts in my lifetime has been the political shift from the Right being concerned with what you do in your bedroom to the illiberal Left being obsessed with what you do in your bedroom.
The true liberal position hasn't changed and I believe what I've believed for most of my adult life - it's none of my business who you want to have sex with, who you do have sex with, how you have sex, and that sexual attraction isn't something that you should try to program or deprogram. All I care about is that nobody is forced or harmed. I might have some personal hang-ups and aversions that you don't have; but, I'm not going to actively attack you or infringe upon your liberty.
For most of my life, the fight was for gay people to be treated equally under the law. That was a civil rights struggle and it's been won. The opponents to that were the religious right. There wasn't a left-wing push for "pray the gay away" camps.
Still, among liberals, there was an understanding that the fact that I, as a straight man who has just never seen a penis and thought "That's gotta go in my mouth right now." was homophobic. The understanding was always that if you believe that all human beings should be treated equally and you don't bother yourself with what people like sexually in your choices of friends and co-workers, you're fine. That's how it should be.
The illiberal Left has...well...abandoned liberalism. Now people are arguing that straight men are transphobic if they don't want to have sex with a woman who has a penis. How is that any different from the "pray the gay away" mentality? The arguments are the same - that you've been programmed or mislead into having an aversion to sex with certain people and you just need therapy to learn who you want to have sex with. It's a push to the same radical Right idea that sexual attraction is a choice and that there's something morally wrong with you if you don't want to have sex with certain people.
It is difficult for me to understand how so many people on the illiberal Left don't see what they're doing.
