As more and more countries are sanctioning North Korea stronger and stronger, its income from export is decreasing drastically. World organisations (and in fact everybody) hopes that this will stop them from developing ballistic missiles. To keep the country 'running', Kim Jong Un needs other important resources of money.
Guest workers
About 100.000 North Koreans are working abroad. A tax rate of 80% creates an astonishing income for the North Korean government. On estimates that Guest workers yields between 1.8 and 2.6 billion dollars a year. Only married sons in North Korea are permitted to work abroad. That's for the simple reason that Kim Jong Un can put their family into jail if he tries to vannish and escape from the North Korean regime. Other sources of income are cybercrime, selling military expertise to Iran and Syria, smuggling, drugs and counterfeiting money.
The money that enters North Korea is used to maintain the luxury life of the elite group and to grow their military equipment. The civilians are suffering a lot from these governemental expenditures as 40% of the people are underfed.
I always feel really bad when I realise in which environment those poor citizens have to survive in.
