So, there I was, finally some time to relax and stroll through Steemit land. I actually used , but oh well, the same blockchain, right? The very first thing I did was check for any new comments or replies. I always need to make sure I show appreciation. Folks the time out of their day to reply to something I posted or said. In return, I always want to try and do the same.
Once I was done with that, I headed on over to my feed of those I follow. I was ready to dig in and do some reading and interaction with the community. To my dismay, it was filled with political rhetoric.
Don’t get me wrong. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on politics, I have mine. However, I just don’t like publicly talking about politics anymore unless I am with close friends. In today’s environment where you are identified and demonized based on your political stance, I just don’t want people to know my political leanings until after they have known me for a long time.
There is a 1996 song by country singer Sammy Kershaw titled “Politics, Religion and Her”. I was unable to find an audio clip of Sammy singing it, but found a guy doing a cover, and is not too bad. You can find an audio clip of at this link: Politics, Religion and Her
If you would like to read along, I provided the lyrics as well:
Hey old buddy how you been
Not much has changed here on my end
No, I don't think she's coming back
We better not get into that
[Begin Chorus:]
Let's talk about baseball
Talk a little small talk
There's gotta be a good joke that you've heard
Let's talk about NASCAR
Old Hollywood movie stars
Let's talk about anything
Anything in this world
But politics, religion, and her
[End Chorus:]
Politics can start a fight
Religion's hard to know who's right
And one more topic I won't touch
Well, that one's her, it hurts too much
[Begin Chorus]
Let's talk about baseball
Talk a little small talk
There's gotta be a good joke that you've heard
Let's talk about NASCAR
Old Hollywood movie stars
Let's talk about anything
Anything in this world
But politics, religion, and her
[End Chorus:]
Let's talk about NASCAR
Old Hollywood movie stars
Let's talk about anything
Anything in this world
But politics, religion, and her
Ole’ Kenny just about sums up my thoughts on it right there.
What I ended up doing, regretfully, was unfollowing a handful of people. Now before you sharpen your knives, I didn’t unfollow because of an occasional post or two. These folks had posted the political rhetoric one post right after the other. Multiple within minutes of each other in one particular case.
Just couldn’t stand the clutter. I wanted to read the posts about the interesting and fun stuff. I'm bombarded almost every minute of the day, from all angles, with political hot air. Steemit is supposed to be my virtual getaway.
I mean where else can you travel the world and see exotic foods from India, fine art in Paris, a sunrise over the pyramids of Egypt and a hillbilly from Tennessee making moonshine in the span of 30 minutes or less?
Who knows, maybe I’ll make it a point to visit every single follower and person I am following over the next week or so and say “Hi”.
For sure! That’s what I am going to do.
Yes, my very own virtual world tour!
