In October 2012 it came to public attention that the British entertainer, Jimmy Savile had been a long time sex abuser of children and vulnerable adults. In the 5 years since this revelation, and with at least 2 official inquiries that ensued, the shocking extent of Savile's abuse and influence is still being uncovered.
Between 1980 and 2008 there were 4 police investigations into Savile's alleged crimes, but he died in October 2011 having never faced justice and, it must be added, unable to defend himself. If we consider what we know about his public career and curious friendships with highly placed individuals that include British Royalty, we are left with significant questions over how Jimmy Savile, a working class DJ from the north, got away with such heinous crimes for so long.
Prior to October 2012, the majority of the British public knew Jimmy Savile to be a somewhat cocky celebrity, vainglorious by nature. But for decades and despite various rumours, he was lauded by the British Establishment and media as a fundraising hero, a figure of high public standing because of his ongoing work for charity. In 1972 when Savile was known only as a radio DJ, he received an OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Order) from the Queen. In 1990 he was Knighted for his services to charity, making him Sir Jimmy Savile. He was put forward for this esteemed award by then Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, whom Savile maintained a long and close relationship with until her death. Also in 1990, Jimmy Savile was awarded a Papal Knighthood by Pope John Paul ll.
In recent years we have seen an outpouring of information relating to historic child sex abuse cases, where extremely prominent figures are shown to have escaped justice. Innumerable police investigations were dropped early and buried, away from public scrutiny. Until now.
What changed with Jimmy Savile, and why are we now seeing so many historic abuse claims surface? Knowing what we now know, can we continue to turn a blind eye?
This blog intends to highlight some of those cases, and remind the reader how (accused) public officials and celebrities appear to have been protected by the highest powers in the land.
This blog intends to remind the reader that child sex abuse of an institutional nature is not only being uncovered in Great Britain at an alarming rate, where the IICSA is currently ongoing, but in every Western country and under the nose of every progressive civilisation.
There is much that we will never read on the front pages of the mainstream news, but this blog also intends to remind the reader that persons who have abused (and/or protected the abusers of) children, are now being exposed at an accelerated rate.
