As part of France's goal to become carbon neutral by 2050, they have announced their plan to ban the sale of all gas and diesel vehicles in 2040. As part of this plan, poorer households will receive a premium in order to swap in their polluting vehicles for clean alternatives.
France joins a number of other countries that have either committed to or floated the idea of banning polluting vehicles. Norway, Germany, India, and the Netherlands have all also proposed these, some as soon as 2025.
France has plenty of other climate initiatives in the works. They have stated they plan on stopping the use of coal for power generation by 2022. Additionally, they have billions of dollars planned for energy efficiency measures. Changes like these will only serve to strengthen the rapid rise of electric vehicles.
