The Book of Wisdom of Ben Sira is a sapiential book of the Bible that reflects and meditates on the mysteries of the true spirituality. And this is because spirituality does not consist of listening to pretty lies or reading self-help books, which, like painkillers, are supposed to cure a serious illness. Whoever does this knows what they're getting into; foolishness is a path to nowhere, and in this situation, like a ship without a rudder, one can only hope to follow the winds of life and whatever fate dictates.
Whoever truly enters the spiritual path, enters a progressive, gradual path towards integrity and adulthood, because wisdom, like a hidden treasure, is not easily grasped but tests on the path of life who is worthy of her, and her hidden mysteries. Wisdom is the knowledge of the correct means to live, and in practice, she is translated into the righteous living: "Do to others what you would have them do to you" Matthew 7:12.
This is why Ben Sira expressed in his book what true happiness and blessedness consist of with these beautiful words:
"Happy those who meditate on Wisdom,
and fix their gaze on knowledge;
Who ponder her ways in their heart,
and understand her paths;
Who pursue her like a scout,
and watch at her entry way" Ben Sira 14:20-22.
Find the wisdom of God and be truly blessed, insisted Master Ben Sira, because common sense in man consists in the devotion to wisdom, in the desire to be instructed by her. It is true that in a world where the love of money rules and distrust among men prevails, this intellectual search seems useless, but wisdom is like eating a fruit; at first it seems rough because of the peel, but when men go deeper she appears smooth and sweet. Wisdom, and this is the great spiritual problem, does not have immediate effects but rather long-term effects, and whoever seeks to solve all their problems in the short term will not find any meaning in their search; the immediacy of things and short-term thinking are the true enemies of God's wisdom.
True spirituality ultimately consists of understanding with the heart that wisdom makes men children and friends of God.
