The legend that is has very kindly asked me to be a guest judge in the latest round of the Portrait Contest. We decided on Movement as a theme as we figured this would get some really interesting and original portraits submitted.
It's a challenging one too as portraits are traditionally shot with still subjects. That's why I really want to see people think outside the box.
Maybe a long exposure shot, locked off on a tripod where your subject was still but a busy background. You'd get some amazing movement in the scene but your subject would be perfectly frozen in the shot.
Or maybe your subject is walking or running and you're panning the shot to match their movements. This is done a lot with sports photography and I've seen it used great for action portraits too.
Maybe even using a flash with quick flash duration to freeze some action while your subject is in the middle of some kick ass movement.
There really are tons of ways to capture movement, but it almost always requires a less traditional technique so I'm really excited to see the submissions. I love finding new creatives on here anyway, plus I'd love to find some work that inspires me to want to shoot in new ways too.
Here's one from my own portfolio where Steph was moving around with her hair flying everywhere while being blasted by fast moving (and particularly cold) water. Her movement was frozen by the flash but the water is flying all around her. It's just one example of capturing movement, but I know you guys will have tons more.
Looking forward to see some epic shots guys!!
