Life is beautiful, but full of challenges. And sometimes it brings with it situations that seem to overwhelm us, and then our ability to adapt, to deal with them and then take one of two paths: either we overcome them or we cope with them. That and other issues are what we see in this feature film based on the story of a historical character. Please join me in this review.

SYNOPSIS

In the late 19th century, Professor James Murray (Mel Gibson) sets out to make an English dictionary containing not only the meaning of every word in the language, but also where it was first recorded and what it meant at the time. Initially, it is supported by Oxford University, but that will change over time.

The film presents the instrumental challenges that the Professor had to face to undertake this colossal task with the technology available at the time. There were also the personal and emotional challenges that battered his integrity. At the same time, it explores the life of Dr. William Chester Minor (Sean Penn) who seems to suffer from schizophrenia but tries to redeem himself from his mistakes as he willingly collaborates with the creation of the dictionary.

Each of these men will have their own struggles, they will find in each other a support. But their friendship will also be put to the test.

DEEP AND REALISTIC THEMES.

Family and work is an age-old struggle that many have not survived. James Murray was in the middle of that battle as he began a move for the mammoth project. And his family was not small: wife and several children. The attitude shown by the wife is admirable. I wonder if it was really like that or a nuance to idealize her for the film. Still, she shows a balance between not interrupting her husband's wishes but at the same time making sure she doesn't distance herself further from them, their children, even, taking quick action that was well understood by the discerning husband.

Problem solving is sometimes not good for some people. Obviously, our emotional and mental condition can color our important decisions. We will see Professor Murray making somewhat desperate decisions, somewhat restrained, but which make the next step possible, even when it was unclear whether he would set foot on firm ground or slippery ground. Likewise, the tormented Doctor Minor will seek to make the best decisions as he faces the consequences of his actions, now that he is physically and mentally limited.

The value of a friendship is clearly seen when the hard times come. It is touching how the friendship between Murray and Minor begins, their work together in person and from a distance, united by a common passion. At the same time, the respect for the friend's decision even though he knows it is not the best one and may lead him into a whirlpool of self-destruction. How far can you go to change your friend's life? How far would you go to take your friend's case?

The damage that can be done by a simple action is something that sometimes cannot be measured. Many of us have probably experienced something like this. And when you don't have emotional stability, it can take many years to digest. In the midst of the psychiatric patient's inner struggles, you will have to deal with actions that only lasted less than a second, but that will touch you to the core of your soul. It is only by stopping and thinking about it that we can continue to take care of what we do and say to people who are fragile.

Ancient medicine is something that is still hard to see. It is hard to think that people were subjected to cruel "treatments" in order to discard some of the methods and ideas they had back then and get us to have the medicine we have today. Also, the loneliness and suffering of those who suffer from mental illness yesterday and today. In their anxiousness to stop what is happening, they are capable of accepting and taking measures that sometimes may not make sense.

THE CHARACTERS

Mel Gibson seems to have enjoyed this role. The costumes and his bushy beard do not prevent us from seeing his excellent performance. Even so, on one occasion I found him overacting when he tried to exaggerate the pain Murray felt when he saw a dark episode in the life of his friend Minor. For his part, I find Sean impeccable in his role, because he avoids showing the doctor as someone totally unhinged. Mental illness is not necessarily perceived externally. So he didn't want to take him to an exaggerated manic terrain.

But Muncie (Eddie Marsan) deserves a separate chapter. This is an official in the center where Minor is held and is key to the development of events around the life of this peculiar patient. Through him comes what unites the protagonists. He is like an angel who carries messages and gifts to Eliza Merret (Natalie Dormer), who is widowed thanks to Minor. A man who shows kindness, gentleness to the people he interacts with, and seems to discern when to make an exception to the law. Bravo.

THE SCENE

For me, it's the scene where the two get to know each other personally. This is not a spoiler. That scene appears in the trailer for the film. It's a moment where they show mutual admiration for each other, acceptance of where each other is at, very rich and meaningful dialogue. Their words become so personal and individualized that they easily make you feel guilty that you are listening to someone else's conversation to which you are not invited and you are not understanding anything. But what you do know is that the two of them are communicating and enjoying the moment. Great.

MY OPINION

I do recommend it. For those who are wary of disturbing and bizarre scenes, there is only one, where Minor falls victim to his instability and commits irreversible damage. I like how it exposes the prejudices of a society that gives unnecessary importance to the titles hanging on a person's wall. Those things do not define a human being, and that is part of what they are trying to show with Murray's persoje.

It is touching to see what Minor tries to do on behalf of the people he has wronged. He tells his own story of redemption as he struggles to remain functional and useful to a project he loves. He struggles to free himself from guilt from a sad and lonely place, using the resources available to him. Who hasn't wanted to make amends and have little to accomplish it?

And we come to the part where I give my opinion: the top 3 phrases. They are here because they are well designed, that make you think, that you remember as time goes by, either because they are authentic, truthful, profound, original, controversial, vile lies or because they are key to understand the movie. Here they are... BANG!

"Aren't we all [insane] to some extent?" (Dr. Richard Brayne).

"The more impossible, the greater the love" (James Murray).

"I killed him again" (William Chester Minor).

It is a well-set film, which tries to sensitively show a task that could have moved away from that, by prioritizing words, writing, paper and story. But behind all that colossal work there were flesh and blood people working for us. At the end you will be able to have an update (until 2019) on how that project and the people turned out. Maybe on the internet you will get more now, four years later. But they'll tell it to you without Gibson and Penn. See you next time!

La vida es bonita, pero llena de desafíos. Y a veces lleva consigo situaciones que parecen sobrepasarnos, y entonces aparece nuestra capacidad de adaptarnos, de atenderlos y entonces tomar uno de los dos camino: o los superamos o los sobrellevamos. Ese y otros temas son los que vemos en éste largometraje basado en la historia de un personaje histórico. Por favor, acompáñame en ésta reseña.

SINOPSIS

A finales del siglo XIX, el Profesor James Murray (Mel Gibson) se propone realizar un diccionario en inglés que contenga, no solamente el significado de cada palabra en ese idioma, sino también desde dónde hay registro de que empezó a usarse y el significado que tenía en ese entonces. En principio, es apoyado por la Universidad de Oxford, pero eso irá cambiando con el paso del tiempo.

El film presenta los desafíos instrumentales que tuvo que enfrentar el Profesor para emprender esa colosal tarea con al tecnología que había en ese entonces. También hubieron desafíos personales y emocionales que golpearon su integridad. A la vez, explora en la vida del Doctor William Chester Minor (Sean Penn) quien parece sufrir de esquizofrenia pero trata de redimirse de sus errores mientras colabora voluntariamente con la creación del diccionario.

Cada uno de estos hombres tendrá sus propias luchas, encontrarán en el otro un apoyo. Pero su amistad también será sometida a prueba.

TEMAS PROFUNDOS Y REALISTAS.

La familia y el trabajo es una lucha añeja a la que muchos no han sobrevivido. James Murray estuvo en el medio de esa batalla al empezar una mudanza para el mayúsculo proyecto. Y su familia no era pequeña: esposa y varios hijos. Es admirable la actitud que muestra la esposa. Me pregunto si de verdad fue así o un matiz para idealizarla para el film. Aún así, muestra un equilibrio entre no interrumpir los deseos de su esposo pero al mismo tiempo asegurándose de que no se distancie más de ellos, de sus niños, incluso, tomando medidas rápidas que fueron bien entendidas por el discernidor esposo.

Resolver los problemas a veces no se le da bien a algunas personas. Obviamente, nuestra condición emocional y mental puede matizar nuestras decisiones importantes. Veremos al Profesor Murray tomando decisiones algo desesperadas, algo comedidas, pero que logran que el próximo paso sea posible, incluso cuando no se veía si pondría el pie en suelo firme o suelo resbaloso. De igual forma, el atormentado Doctor Minor buscará tomar las mejores decisiones al enfrentar las consecuencias de sus acciones, ahora que está limitado física y mentalmente.

El valor de una amistad se ve claramente cuando llegan los momentos difíciles. Es conmovedor cómo inicia la amistad entre Murray y Minor, su trabajo mancomunado presencial y a distancia, unidos por una pasión en común. Al mismo tiempo, el respeto de la decisión del amigo aunque sabe que no es el mejor y que puede conducirlo a un remolino de autodestrucción. ¿Hasta dónde se puede llegar para cambiarle la vida a tu amigo? ¿Hasta qué instancias llegarías para llevar el caso de tu amigo?

El daño que puede ocasionar una acción sencilla es algo que a veces no se puede medir. Probablemente muchos hemos vivido algo así. Y cuando no se cuenta con una estabilidad emocional puede que tardemos muchos años en digerirlo. En medio de las luchas internas del paciente psiquiátrico, tendrá que lidiar con acciones que solo duraron menos de un segundo, pero que le llegarán al fondo su alma. Solo al detenerte y pensar en ello es que podemos seguir cuidando lo que hacemos y decimos ante las personas que se encuentran frágiles.

La medicina antigua es algo que aún cuesta ver. Es difícil pensar que personas fueron sometidas a crueles "tratamientos" para lograr descartar algunos métodos e ideas que se tenían entonces y lograr que tengamos la medicina que tenemos hoy. También, la soledad y sufrimiento de quien sufre enfermedades mentales ayer y hoy. En sus ansias por detener lo que está sucediendo es capaz de aceptar y medidas que en ocasiones pueden carecer de sentido.

LOS PERSONAJES

Mel Gibson parece haberse disfrutado éste papel. El vestuario y su poblada barba no impide que podamos ver su excelente interpretación. Aún así, en una ocasión me pareció sobreactuación al intentar exagerar el dolor que sentía Murray al ver un oscuro episodio de la vida de su amigo Minor. Por su parte, veo impecable a Sean en su papel, porque evita mostrar al doctor como alguien totalmente desquiciado. Las enfermedades mentales no necesariamente se perciben externamente. Así que no quiso llevarlo a un terreno maníaco exagerado.

Pero un capítulo aparte merece Muncie (Eddie Marsan). Éste es un funcionario en el centro donde está retenido Minor y es clave para el desarrollo de los acontecimientos alrededor de la vida de éste peculiar paciente. A través de él llega lo que une a los protagonistas. Es como un ángel que lleva recados y regalos a Eliza Merret (Natalie Dormer), quien ha enviudado gracias a Minor. Un hombre que muestra bondad, amabilidad a las personas con las que interactúa, y parece discernir cuándo se debe hacer una excepción a la ley. Bravo.

LA ESCENA

Para mi, es la escena donde ambos se conocen personalmente. No es spoiler. Esa escena aparece en el trailer del film. Es un momento en el que se muestran admiración mutua, aceptación del lugar en el que está cada uno, diálogos muy ricos y llenos de significado. Sus palabras llegan a ser tan personales e individualizadas que fácilmente te hacen sentir culpable de estar escuchando una conversación ajena a la que no estás invitado y no estás entendiendo nada. Pero lo que sí sabes es que los dos sí están comunicándose y están disfrutando de ese momento. Genial.

MI OPINIÓN

Sí la recomiendo. Para los que se cuidan de las escenas perturbadoras y bizarras, sólo hay una, donde Minor es víctima de su inestabilidad y comete un daño irreversible. Me gusta cómo expone los prejuicios de una sociedad que le otorga innecesaria importancia a los títulos colgados en la pared de una persona. Esas cosas no definen a un ser humano, y es parte de lo que tratan de mostrar con el persoje de Murray.

Es conmovedor ver lo que trata de hacer Minor a favor de las personas que ha perjudicado. Cuenta su propia historia de redención, mientras lucha por mantenerse funcional y útil para un proyecto que le gusta. Lucha para liberarse de la culpa desde un lugar triste y solitario, usando los recursos que tiene disponible. ¿Quién no ha querido reparar el daño y tener poco para lograrlo?

Y llegamos a la parte donde doy mi opinión: el top 3 de frases. Están aquí por ser bien diseñadas, que te hacen pensar, que recuerdas al pasar el tiempo, bien sea por ser autenticas, veraces, profundas, originales, controversiales, viles mentiras o porque son clave para entender la película. Aquí están... ¡PUM!

Es un film bien ambientado, que trata de mostrar con sensibilidad una tarea que pudo haberse alejado de eso, al priorizar las palabras, la escritura, el papel y la historia. Pero detrás de todo ese colosal trabajo habían personas de carne y hueso trabajando para nosotros. Al final podrás tener una actualización (hasta 2019) de cómo quedó ese proyecto y las personas. Tal vez en internet se consiga más ahora, cuatro años después. Pero te la contarán sin Gibson ni Penn. ¡Hasta la próxima!
