Vampires, a theme used from time to time in horror series or movies, have become a bit more "viral" at the moment. A couple of very recent series have incorporated them, and both have generally achieved some success and good reviews, perhaps one more than the other.

However, Chapelwaite is based on a short story by Stephen King called Jerusalem's Lot, published in 1978. Midnight Mass was probably also influenced by this book, but it had better reviews than Chapelwaite.

(en ambas series un vampiro se quema con el sol de formas muy parecidas). Chapelwaite se estrenó primero, en Agosto de este año. Midnight Mass se estrenó un mes después, teniendo mejor recepción. Sin embargo, Chapelwaite se basa en una historia corta de Stephen King llamada Jerusalem's Lot, publicada en 1978. Probablemente Midnight Mass también se influenció por este libro, pero lo cierto es que tuvo mejores reseñas que Chapelwaite.
Both series have very different contexts. One is inspired by the present day and the other by the 1850s. One revolves around religion, the other around mystery. However, both series share much in common, from vampires to the religious context around them. It also stands out that for being from different times, prejudice and religious discrimination are present in both series, perhaps due to the fact that both are set in a small American town.

There are several series based on vampire stories. Particularly, the one I remember the most and liked the most was The Strain, created by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. It had 4 seasons, from 2014 to 2017. The two series I review in this post share something in common with The Strain: the presence of a "leader" vampire who commands everyone, establishing a "cult" that seeks to dominate and enslave humanity. The Strain was a rather raw series and very different from the slower, more leisurely pace of Midnight Mass and Chapelwaite.

This series is not for people with little patience, but despite this, it is worth watching. Its good reviews are due to the good conduction of the story, where in spite of its somewhat slow first chapters, it ends in a spectacular way, and in an impressive manner. In the first two chapters you may think that the series does not have much to offer, but when you see some kind of creature flying on the island, you immediately begin to suspect that something is coming, the story gradually comes to fruition.

It is a paced and slower series than Chapelwaite, but its good driving and script made it get more positive reviews. Once you get to the third chapter, you must finish watching the story, because that's when you start to see the best. What I liked most about this series, is its transcendental message about life, death, God, the universe, which was combined in an interesting way with the vampire theme.

Another recurring theme in Midnight Mass is the Bible, and its "vampiric" interpretations by the cult in an attempt to control the inhabitants (who are strong believers). It is suggested that the "Angels" mentioned in the Bible were vampires, and that one of them is on the island. I believe that, indirectly, they make reference to the fact that Jesus Christ was a vampire, although the series does not mention it.

is a series produced by Peter and Jason Filardi. It stars the well-known actor Adrien Brody, in the character of Captain Charles Boone. It is based on a book by Stephen King. This series is set in a small town in the United States in the 19th century. Like Midnight Mass, Chapelwaite increases in intensity as we approach the last chapter. But perhaps in Chapelwaite we could say that the ending is "diluted" a bit, although it wasn't too bad. Also, the script and the chemistry between the characters (in my opinion) was not up to the level of Midnight Mass. We can highlight the great performance of Adrien Brody and the role of the leader of the vampires (Jakub), although he did not appear many times.

In Midnight Mass, the plot focused on the island. Instead, in Chapelwaite, we have several locations, which perhaps gave room for some characters and subplots to not develop as well. But overall, I liked the series, and perhaps it would have been interesting to know a little more about the vampire cult, their God and their leader (and if there are others...).
