Algunas plantas poseen o producen efectos especiales en los gatos, la más conocida es la hierba gatera o catnip, que tiene efectos en algunos gatos y en otros no, hoy quiero hablarles de otra planta que tiene efecto en nuestros peludos que es muy conocida y usada en los humanos, pero que tiene el efecto contrario que en nosotros y es la Valeriana.

Todos en algún momento hemos escuchado que le digan a alguien cercano o a nosotros que deberíamos tomar valeriana la razón es que en los humanos tiene efectos sedantes y relajantes. Reduce el nerviosismo y la agitación, facilita la conciliación del sueño y mejora su calidad. Pero resulta que en los gatos no produce ese efecto produce euforia y también podría o mejor dicho muchos la catalogan junto a la Hierba gatera como la droga para gatos. Por cierto, y es bueno aclarar, a pesar de que la valeriana se considere una droga para los gatos, no es adictiva.

Muchos mininos, no todos sienten o son atraídos por el olor de la valeriana y tras olerla se podríamos decir que se sienten extasiados y no hay quien pueda detenerlos, se frotan en el lugar donde perciben su olor, pueden también salivar o ronronean. Otros pueden incluso empezar a corretear por la casa o el jardín como si fuera una pista de carreras. Algunos se comportan como si estuvieran embriagados o atontados. La razón está en el olor de la raíz de la valeriana. Esta recuerda a los bigotudos determinadas hormonas que las hembras emiten en la época de apareamiento. Se trata de un tema de feromonas.

Muchos juguetes para gatos están rellenos o impregnados con valeriana, pero el olor de la valeriana seca para nosotros es similar al de una media sucia sudada, para nosotros es asqueroso, pero para alguno de nuestros hijos peludos este olor es delicioso. Existen todo tipo de juguetes y accesorios impregnados con este olor y al finalmente es para su disfrute no para ti y la intención es que tu o tus gatos estén a gusto con lo que se le trajo y que lo utilice, como por ejemplo un rascador o árbol para gatos que compres con la intención de salvar a tus muebles de las garras afiladas de tu hijo peludo. Si ya tienes uno y tu gato no lo mira prueba a restregar la valeriana en la cuerda sisal o fabrica un juguete artesanal utilizando la bolsa de infusión de valeriana. Colócalo colgando del rascador y verás cómo se convierte en su sitio favorito.

Ahora bien, si tu gato es un flojo, prueba a atar una bolsita de infusión de valeriana en su caña de juguete ¡podrías llevarte una sorpresa! Si ya tienes el juguete o accesorio y lo que deseas es que tu hijo se siente atraído a él (ya que lo ignora) existen aerosoles con este olor o podrías comprar raíz de valeriana seca y colocarla en el lugar deseado, ahora, el detalle está en si tu gato está entre los que aman este olor o entre los que simplemente no se sienten para nada atraídos por el.

Un dato importante es que si tu gato o gatos se sienten atraídos por el olor de la valeriana no debes abusar del mismo, la razón dejará de tener ese efecto sobre ellos y perdieran el interés en el juguete. Además, como la valeriana tiene efecto estimulante algunos mininos podrían reaccionar de manera agresiva, si notas esta reacción no la uses ya que estas es alterando a tu gato, recuerda que es un estimulante así que a no es adecuado para relajar a los gatos antes de viajar o para otras ocasiones emocionantes.

Es importante que no dejes la valeriana al alcance de tu gato la razón es que si la consumen en exceso podría provocar molestias estomacales y vómitos y en exceso ella podría dañar su hígado, debe ser usada con medida y bajo supervisión. Es decir, que lo que resulta tóxico es la cantidad ingerida.
