Have you seen the Stateofthedapps rankings? Steemit is on top of the bunch, but DTube is down at about number 76! While that’s actually not that bad, considering how many dapps exist overall, I think DTube should be doing much better than that. Especially since it’s one of the largest, if not the largest dapps on the Steem blockchain.
This year, I’m going to endeavour to use more of the dapps, particularly DTube. I have been uploading videos, but I’m going to try uploading more this year. In order to achieve this, I’m going to have to find a happy medium between quality and quantity.
I’m going to streamline my process a little, starting with my gear. Right now I record with both my iPhone and my mirrorless camera. The flow with the mirrorless is the lack of an audio-in port, so I am not able to use an external microphone for better audio - which I think is very crucial in making videos. It also has some connectivity issues with my Mac, so at present have to download the video in a two step process, which is a bit of a waste of time.
Going forward, I’m going to shoot more with the iPhone, which has an audio-in port, so I can archive the better audio quality without having to synch in post. Also, considering the raison d’etre of DTube at the moment, consistency is of more value than visual quality of the video.
The second thing I will be optimising is my editing process. I am reverting to my first love, iMovie. I hadn’t used it in 3 years, and quite a lot has changed since. Apple has really re-designed it to feel more like the iOS version, which is clean and simple. I edited the last two videos with iMovie and I really enjoyed it. It’s much less powerful than FinalCut Pro X, but that’a just it - I don’t need that much power right now. Besides, my computer is ageing so FCP is finding it hard to run properly now.
I tried DaVinci Resolve, which is brilliant (and free), but I didn’t enjoy editing on there at all. I think I need a much bigger screen than my 13” mac for DR to be an efficient tool. Right now it’s just really hard to use. I love the colour grading tool though, which is sadly missing in iMovie. To combat that, I’m going to try and customise the video look in-camera so I don’t have to colour correct much.
Finally, I'm really thinking of avoiding the use of music in my videos. I've been having major copyright issues on videos I uploaded 2-3 years ago on YouTube. The music was supposedly public domain at the time, but not anymore. Various unscrupulous companies have found a way of registering some of these musical pieces as theirs. They then register with YouTube/Google and send out copyright notices. Since Google is too big to give a damn about what's what, creators are left fighting these daft requests on their own. Most (like me) just don't bother.
Peace and Love ✌🏿
