A couple of days ago I decided to tell my boss that I'm finishing all my tasks, cleaning my desk and packing my suitcase, but not forever, only for a week so I could use the rest of my vacation days.
It would've been a waste if they were left unused, would it not?
Easy going atmosphere at work with not a lot of requests and demands permitted me to google the long term weather forecast for the northern part of Europe we had been planning to visit, specifically Luxembourg, Germany and The Netherlands.
The forecast said it should be warm and sunny with a few showers. The information was vital because we had hundreds of kilometers we had to cross.
I started the trip from Croatia with my friend Mark. We were accommodated by his friend Ana that has been living and working in Luxembourg for a few years.
We hadn't planned which cities we were going to visit. It was a decision we made in the mornings when we woke up or while we were driving and suddenly wanted to get of the highway or change the destination on the GPS.
We had a car, good roads and some money to spent. What more could you want?
PROBLEMS BEFORE DEPARTURE
A day before the departure, more precisely only few a hours before I had to turn of my computer at work and go home to pack, my boss had walked in holding in his hand a tender.
With his deep and hoarse voice he made an announcement that there was a new job competition. And the deadline for application was the following day at 9 a.m.
My thoughts of vacation, travel and weather forecast were abruptly interrupted by a piece of paper with black ink which passed from hand to hand until it finally landed on my desk.
I took the assignment, for I know there was no point in arguing and wastefully losing energy.
I started collecting the necessary papers and writing the bill of quantities.I was finished around 11 p.m. and began packing at midnight.
The most important thing was to take the passport, phone, money, chargers, and camera, because as the new generations like to say: pics or it didn't happen.
I had put my stuff in a suitcase quickly, closed the zip and then noticed that a padlock was missing in order for me to lock everything down.
Someone who was the last one to use the suitcase didn't report the loss.
At that point, I was so tired to be thinking about when, where and by whom was it last used.
All I knew was that I had to buy a new one somewhere along the way, nothing else was important anymore.
BUS, COOKIE AND LJUBLJANA
The departure was from the Zagreb bus station at 11. Mark and I had met a few minutes before, checked in our luggage and entered the bus. To our surprise, it was a double-decker and we immediately climbed up.
The overall stress from the tender that was piling up the night before was gone with the sound of the bus engine starting.
We were off to Ljubljana where we had to board a plane to Charleroi, Belgium airport and upon arrival catch a bus for the City of Luxembourg.
It took us a little over two hours to get to Ljubljana, with one pit-stop, after we had crossed the border. We stretched our legs, took a walk and entered the restaurant to see what kind of food was offered.
The choice was large, on the menu, there were all sorts of soups, meats, fish, side dishes and desserts.
After about 15 minutes of break, we continued. Mark and I had with us sandwiches and homemade cakes that Marks' mum had surprised us before the trip.
We had enough water and, of course, a full flask of coffee.
That way we've saved few euros and we weren't hungry.
As we arrived in Ljubljana we still had two more hours to kill before the local bus that takes us to the airport. I've had remembered to buy the padlock for the suitcase.
After successful shopping, we wondered through the center of the town by the river Ljubljanica.
The town was full of tourists that were sightseeing with their guides, taking pictures.
We had a beer in one of the bars and headed to the airport.
That's how our adventure had started.
I'm curious to know, whether you carry your own food, water and a flask of coffee when you go on a long trip and do you buy a new toothbrush on vacations because you forgot to take yours?
