Looks like the sign ups for the new app from Meta are rolling in quickly crossing 2M users within just a couple of hours from launch. Twitter finally has a direct competitor so the question becomes, can Meta do Twitter better than Twitter?
The company does have a very good track record in cloning ideas from other social media apps. Adding stories from Snapchat and reels from TikTok have been huge for the instagram app to stay relevant. In many ways, they’ve done those features better than the original platforms.
But there is an alternative example that didn’t turn out very well - Google Plus.
Granted, in this scenario Google did not already have a thriving social media platform to use as a base. Still, the idea of posting to a different platform but didn’t offer enough newer features became a major roadblock. How will Twitter users feel about doubling up on their posts?
Then again, there is the culture divide.
No need to get into the politics behind it, but people feel very strongly one way or another about Elon musk. Meta capitalizing on this by finally creating an actual alternative to Twitter may be enough to get people to actually leave. we are still in early days so I’m curious to see what kind of culture develops on Threads as the audience from Instagram is vastly different than the one from Twitter.
Regardless, I’m not want to bet against either Mark Zuckerberg or Elon Musk so I’ve got my popcorn ready to see how the battle plays out. If I had to make a prediction just based on my own experiences using both Twitter and Instagram, I expect different cultures and therefore different conversations on the platforms (Twitter & Threads). We’ll see what evolves over the next few weeks and months!
