War Thunder is a Military combat simulator with the focus being on ground, aerial, and naval vehicles, in this post I'll be talking about Tanks in the arcade mode.
Playing with tanks at tier 1 is a lot like driving a Go kart with laser tag cannons equipped, Fast driving and everybody shooting like crazy. In fact in some tanks you can even drift which makes some pretty memorable moments if you manage to pull off a turn and hit your target with the cannon.
(I totally did that here!)
At the beginning of the match you can choose what shell type to equip for your cannon, War Thunder gives you a ton of information about the shell type and how it'll hit the target depending on angle and distance.
You can even see how your tank armor holds up at certain angles in the main menu when you select the 'Armor' Option
You can see that at the bottom left is my tanks status, crew number, and gears. 41 KM/h is pretty fast compared to later tiers! At the bottom right there is the map, you can see where the starting points are for each team and the control points. At the bottom of the screen there is your selection bar, 1 through 3 is meant for different shell types if you have them equipped, 5 is an artillery strike, 6 is the fire prevention, 7 8 and 9 give you the option to fly a plane if you get enough points, and 0 is a tow hook in case you or your ally get stuck or can even be used to drag vehicle carcasses.
After the match is over you get research points to upgrade your tank and points to upgrade your crew for better handling of the tank.
Keen vision to determine enemy tanks, Field Repair to quicken the repair time, Agility to replace crewmates that have been knocked out, Vitality to keep your crew from getting knocked out. The last skill is the only different thing that is unique to the specific role.
At the first few tiers this makes a small difference but as you advance you will start to see a difference that could mean a win or defeat for your tank.
There are different nations to choose from and the Developers at War Thunder (Gaijin) do their best to make each tank as historically accurate as possible.
Here's the USSR tree, There are lots of different tank types! SPAA's, Tank Destroyers, Light Tanks, Medium Tanks, Heavy Tanks, and as you go further down the tree you move to more advanced vehicles.
War Thunder is fun to play and the amount of vehicles to choose from is amazing for tanks and the other vehicle types (Air and Sea). The Community is a little jaded and have a love/hate relationship with the developers, You might often hear 'Thanks Gaijin!' when there is a flub in the gameplay. but there are still plenty of players online at all hours!
Playing tier 1 through 3 is a blast and this is where you'll probably get the most fun out of the game but if you decide to take steps into tier 4 and above you'll run into committed players who take the game more seriously than the average player.
I've been playing War Thunder for over 6 years and I still play it for an hour or so every few day and there are still moments that surprise me!
That's all for this part! Next part will be about naval boats.
