( EN / DE ) 52 years ago, for my 2nd birthday, I received this small gold coin as a birthday gift from my grandfather.
It is a so-called "simple gold ducat", which is very common in Austria. Ducats go back to the Middle Ages, where they were used as a payment system. Even though they had already been superseded by silver coinage, ducats were still used as a payment throughout Europe until the beginning of the last century.
Now of course the ducat I have here is not that old. Beginning after the 2nd World War, a great amount of these coins were re-minted in Austria, mainly as gifts or investments. These have as a motif Emperor Franz Josef with his laurel wreath, the reverse shows the double-headed eagle and the date "1915" is the same for all recoinages. Especially around the 70's many were minted and the demand was very high and there were also matching gift cases avaiable.
And exactly one of these ducats is the one I received as a gift from my grandfather in 1970.
I googled for the price just for this post and its current value fluctuates between 200 - 480 EUR, there seems to be probably very large price differences.
For me the FIAT value is anyway irrelevant. Of course the coin has a completely different value for me, because it is a beautiful memory and therefore I will probably always hold it in honor and one day bequeath to my descendants, so that it remains in the family.
But just in case, such small low-priced coins are of course an emergency option, so would have to consider maybe buying a few more of them. Whereas in times of crisis, coins with even lower value would probably be more helpful.
About the increase in value of this coin over time I could not find out anything specific. In general 1 ounce of gold is given in 1970 with 36, - USD and is now currently at 1,769, - USD , if this price is reflected in the coin, then that would have been with a current value of EUR 400, - then a price of EUR 8, - back in 1970.
8 EUR are about 109, - Austrian shillings and a birthday gift in the amount of 100, - ÖS would have been quite conceivable from my grandfather.
I don't take the coin out of the casket very often, but when I do, I love its warm golden glow.

Ein besonderes altes Geburtstagsgeschenk
Vor 52 Jahren, zu meinem 2. Geburtstag habe ich diese kleine Goldmünze von meinem Großvater zum Geburtstag geschenkt bekommen.
Es ist ein sogenannter "einfacher Golddukat", der in Österreich sehr weit verbreitet ist. Dukaten gehen auf das Mittelalter zurück, wo sie als Zahlungssystem verwendet wurden. Auch wenn sie schon von Silbermünze abgelöst worden waren, waren sie doch bis zum Beginn des vorigen Jahrhunderts waren Dukaten in ganz Europa als Zahlungsmittel im Einsatz.
Nun ist der Dukat den ich hier habe natürlich nicht so alt. Beginnend nach dem 2. Weltkrieg wurden in Österreich sehr viele dieser Münzen nachgeprägt, haupstächlich als Geschenk oder Geldanlage. Diese haben als Motiv Kaiser Franz Josef mit seine Lorbeerkranz, die Rückseite zeigt den Doppeladler und das Datum "1915" ist bei allen Nachprägungen gleich. Vor allem um die 70er Jahre wurden sehr viele geprägt und die Nachfrage war sehr groß und es gab auch passende Geschenk Etuis dazu.
Und genau einer dieser Dukaten ist der, den ich von meinem Großvater im Jahr 1970 geschenkt bekam.
Ich habe nur für diesen Post nach dem Preis gegoogelt und sein aktueller Wert schwankt zurzeit zwischen 200 - 480 EUR, da scheint es wohl sehr große Preisunterschiede zu geben.
Für mich ist der FIAT Wert ohnehin irrelevant, denn die Münze hat für mich persönlich natürlich einen völlig anderen Wert, weil sie eine schöne Erinnerung ist und daher werde ich sie wohl immer in Ehren halten und wahrscheinlich eines Tages an meine Nachkommen vererben, damit sie in der Familie bleibt.
Aber für den Fall der Fälle sind solche kleinen niedrigpreisigen Münzen natürlich eine Notfallvariante, so müsste man sich überlegen vielleicht ein paar mehr davon zu kaufen. Wobei in Krisenzeiten wahrscheinlich eher Münzen mit noch geringerem Wert hilfreich sein würden.
Über die Wertsteigerung dieser Münze im Laufe der Zeit konnte ich nichts genaues herausfinden. Eine Unze Gold wird im Jahr 1970 mit 36,- USD angegeben und ist jetzt aktuell bei 1.769,- USD , falls sich dieser Preis in der Münze widerspiegelt, dann wären das bei jetzigem Wert von EUR 400,- damals ein Preis von EUR 8,- gewesen.
8 EUR sind ca 109,- österreichische Schillinge und ein Geburtstagsgeschenk in der Höhe von 100,- ÖS wäre von meinem Großvater durchaus denkbar gewesen.
Ich nehme die Münze nicht sehr oft aus der Schatulle, aber wenn ich es tue, dann liebe ich ihren warm goldenen Schimmer.
