Hello fellow travelers! Today I'm bringing you two more castles for my collection, bringing the total to over 50. We'll be covering more than 70-80% of the castles in Portugal. It was a long trip since we had to travel to the north and center of the country, which meant I had to make two stops and sleep in the north! This is a project I've been sharing on HIVE, and it's taking many hours and a lot of money to reach our goal, but we're getting closer every day! Hola amigos viajeros, hoy les traigo dos castillos mas para mi coleccion asi sumamos mas de 50, estariamos completando mas del 70-80% de los Castillos de Portugal, fue un largo viaje ya que tuvimos que ir al norte y el centro del pais, lo que me obligo a realizar dos paradas y dormir en el norte! a sido un proyecto que e estado compartiendo en HIVE y que me esta tomando muchas horas y dinero para lograr el objetivo pero cada vez estamos mas cerca!!! te dejo un post guia para disfrutar ambos sitios.🛺🏰

Whenever we think of Portugal, the image of the Tagus and Douro rivers immediately captures our attention! In major cities like Porto and Lisbon, the river is an integral part of the culture and a must-have in our photos! But in the heart of Coimbra, a millennial castle, built on the high hills of Arouca and surrounded by characteristic rock formations, lies hidden among forests and mist, awaiting our visit! Germanelo Castle watches over the horizon from its imposing height in Penela (Rabaçal). Today we'll explore both...🌏⛰️

Siempre que pensamos en Portugal, la imagen de los rios "Tejo y Duero", nos acaparan las miradas!! normalmente en las ciudades principales como Porto y Lisboa el rio es algo que esta presente en la cultura y no puede faltar en nuestras fotos!! pero en el corazon de Coimbra, se esconde un Castillo millennial construido en las colinas altas de Arouca y que es rodeado con la roca caracteristica, oculto entre bosque y niebla aguarda nuestra visita!! el Castillo de Germanelo vigila el horizonte desde su imponente altura en Penela (Rabaçal), hoy exploraremos ambos...🗺️🧭

To get to Lousã Castle, you would have to go north to the Coimbra district, then head towards the Lousã mountain range. The main town is a few kilometers away. Getting there is quite an adventure, and I really recommend doing it in a rental car. If you're in Porto, it's much closer than from Lisbon. The castle itself is isolated.⛰️🌏🏰

Para ir al castillo de Lousã tendriamos que ir hacia el norte del pais, hasta el distrito de Coimbra, luego ir hacia la direccion de la sierra de Lousã, como referencia tenemos a pocos kilometros la villa principal, llegar aqui es toda una odisea y de verdad te recomiendo hacer esto en vehiculo alquilado, si estas en Porto te queda mucho mas cerca que de Lisboa; el castillo en si esta aislado.🏔️🏞️🛺

Avoid winter at all costs, the weather was awful! Rain, cloudy, too windy, and it had snowed in this area just days before! The best time of year to visit the castles is spring or autumn; summer is very touristy!🫣🚩

Eviten invierno a toda costa, el clima estaba horrible! lluvia, nublado, demasiado viento, dias antes habia nevado por esta zona! la mejor epoca del ano para visitar los castillos son en primavera o otono, verano tiene muchos turistas!🗺️

This castle is one of the most beautiful and visited in Portugal. Its river and natural surroundings make it a historical marvel. Its characteristic hexagonal construction, with Romanesque and Gothic architecture from the period, stands out for the use of local stone as building material. From here you can take a walk to the "schist" villages, also popular for their rocks. Built in the 11th century, it witnessed countless battles of conquest and reconquest between the Portuguese and the Moors. It was the great King Henry who recovered it for Portugal.🌍📍

Este castillo es uno de los mas bonitos y visitados de Portugal, debido a su rio y su entorno natural lo convierte en una maravilla historica, su construccion hexagonal caracteristico con arquitectura romanica y gotica de la epoca se destaca por el uso de material de construccion de piedras locales, desde aqui puedes hacer una caminata hacia las aldeas de "xistos" tambien popular por sus rocas, construido en el siglo XI presencio inumerables batallas de conquistas y reconquistas entre Portugueses y Moros, fue el gran D. Henrique quien lo recuperaria a Portugal.🗺️🚩

The Legend of the Castle🌍🚙/ La leyenda del Castillo📍🧭

There is a legend that says that the castle was built by an Arab named Arunce, who had a daughter named Peralta. It is believed that he built this castle to protect her and his treasures, but when he was defeated in the Battle of Conimbriga, to this day it is thought that the ghost of his daughter walks the halls of the castle.🚩🗺️

Hay una leyenda que cuenta que quien construyo el castillo fue un arabe con nombre: Arunce y tenia una hija llamada Peralta, se cree que construye este castillo para protegerla y a su vez a sus tesoros, pero cuando es derrotado en la batalla de Conimbriga hasta el dia de hoy se piensa que el fantasma de su hija recorre los pasillos del castillo.🏞️🏔️

This castle is very different from the previous one; it is even more isolated, and to reach it you need to take a 30-minute trail, more suitable for hiking than sightseeing. The castle is located in Penela (Rabaçal), which also belongs to Coimbra.🗺️🫣

Este es un castillo muy diferente al anterior, es mas aislado aun y para llegar a el necesitas hacer un sendero de 30 minutos, mas para senderismo que para turismo, el castillo se situa en: Penela (Rabaçal) que tambien pertenece a Coimbra 🌏⛰️

The Legend of the Castle🌍🚙/ La leyenda del Castillo📍🧭

Here the legend is stranger. According to the local inhabitants, the lands were created by two giant brothers named Mero and Gerumelo, who were blacksmiths. They shared a single hammer, which they threw back and forth, since one lived in the north and the other in the south. On one occasion, one of them threw the hammer with such force that it broke in two, giving rise to Zambujal and Fartosa.🏰🗺️

Aqui la leyenda es mas extrana, segun los habitantes locales lo que dio origen a las tierras, fueron dos hermanos gigantes llamados Mero y Gerumelo, los cuales eran herreros, ellos compartian un unico martillo que se lo lanzaban de un lado a otro, esto porque vivia uno en el norte y otro en el sur, en una ocasion uno de ellos lanzo el martillo con tanta fuerza que cayo en dos partes dando origen a zambujal y Fartosa 🏔️🌏

About the castle🌍🚙/ Sobre el castillo📍🧭

This castle offers a better view of the valley than the previous one, and its construction, using limestone, is a different style. It has no set opening hours since it's a ruin and is open 24 hours a day. The Rabaçal Valley is the first thing that captivates visitors upon arrival with its panoramic views. It was built between 1142 and 1144 during the Reconquista by Afonso, the first king of Portugal, and stands at an altitude of 367 meters.🗺️🏰

Este castillo tiene mejor vista al valle que el anterior y la construccion fue con piedra caliza, otro estilo diferente, no tiene horario de abertura ya que es una ruina esta abierto las 24h, el valle de Rabaçal es lo primero que nos cautiva al llegar por sus panoramicas, su fecha de construccion fue entre 1142 y 1144 en la epoca de las reconquistas por Alfonso el primer rey de Portugal, esta a 367 metros de altura 🏞️🚩
