In the heart of Sintra, more than 300 meters above sea level, a convent peeks out from a virgin forest... But this convent is notable for having been built with cork, but that's not what should surprise us... There's also a legend of a friar who lived for 150 years subsisting solely on bread and water. What should we believe? Is it true? What if we go there ourselves and discover what the Capuchin Convent hides? Prepare yourself; what you'll see in this post will leave you speechless!

The Capuchin Monastery is located in the heart of Sintra, as shown in the image. In my personal opinion, it's one of the most difficult to access because public transport is quite limited. I didn't see a single bus in this area, only towards the Pena Palace and the historic center. It's suitable for all ages!
Ticket price and public transport๐๐ / Precio del billete y transporte publico๐ฉ๐ธ

My intuition was right... There's no public transport here. The closest bus is the 1253, and then you'd have to walk the equivalent of 2-3 km. That stretch is a bit more demanding, but if you rented a car, it's easy to get there, and there's free and ample parking! It's open every day from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Tickets cost โฌ11 for adults, โฌ9 for youth and seniors, and a family pack for โฌ29 (two adults and two children)!
Why is there cork at the entrance?๐๐ / Por que hay corcho en la entrada?

As they say... First impressions count, and upon arrival we see cork at the entrance, referring to the interior wall covering of the convent, which has been like that for over 500 years.
A virgin forest๐๐ฒ / Un bosque virgen ๐ฉ๐ธ

In the 16th century, the reintroduction of exotic plant species began in the Sintra mountains, with the aim of creating a unique landscape in the country and enjoying diverse ecosystems. At that time, various royal palaces in the area, used as holiday retreats for royalty, introduced plants from all over the world. However, the forest of the Capuchin Monastery was never altered, and is therefore the only place in Sintra that remains "original".

My videos and posts are very comprehensive, you don't have to look anywhere else! I show you every corner of Sintra
โ
Visit Sintra in winter or spring; leave summer for other locations in Portugal
โ
A rental car can cost you up to 25-30 euros per day, which is cost-effective if you're going to areas like these; you can see everything in 3 days.
โ
Keep in mind that there are places that are impossible to reach with wheelchairs, and with babies you have to carry them without using a stroller; it's better to use a baby carrier, especially if you're going on a hike.

The sign of the cross๐๐ฒ / La senal de la cruz๐ฉ๐ธ

The first image we see upon entering the Capucho is a series of crosses. They were built during the time of the convent and symbolized the short duration of life on this earthly plane, and how we should take advantage of it in communion with God, remembering that the convent practiced Christianity.

According to the information that is known, in the year 1560, King รlvaro de Castro gave the order to build the convent in homage to the viceroy Joรฃo de Castro who was in charge of the policy of India, it all began with a dream where the king got lost while going hunting, and where the crosses and stones are, the king saw that scene in his dream and there he built the convent.

The central focus of the post is the coexistence among the friars, who for many years settled in this convent to live as very humble Christian worshippers. I always use the comparison that this convent is the "antonym" of the luxurious "Pena Palace." The friars believed that the less they had, the less distraction from the earthly world they had, allowing them to worship God.

The legend of the friar who lived 150 years๐๐ฏ /La leyenda del fraile que vivio 150 anos๐ฉ๐ธ

According to local legend, a friar lived in the convent and lived to be 100-150 years old, eating only bread and water. No one has been able to corroborate this story, but it's interesting. Nowadays, we see people living to be 100-110 years old. Personally, I think someone who eats healthy food and lives in a peaceful environment could reach that age! What do you think?
