It's not a big surprise that google got into the AI game, they rolled google bard in early 2023 unfortunately it wasn't available in every region like here for me in Canada but a VPN would allow you to use the tool even if you are not in a supported region.
Well recently google renamed Bard to Gemini and it is now available in more regions without VPN not sure what the scoop is with that but I would be curious to find out why they limited access to specific regions not sure if it had to do with regulation or if they just wanted to roll it out on a smaller scale before committing to expansion.
These companies really like to rename their stuff, I was going to talk about bing chat and realized the too recently renamed their AI product to copilot.
The reason I was going to bring up bing chat (now called copilot)
was because one of the key features the google AI has is the ability to access the internet, that is also true for Microsoft copilot.
GPT-4 doesn't have access to the internet however Microsoft copilot is GPT-4 based with some tweaks to make it extra vanilla and allow it to access the internet.
I have tired many AI tools and I must say google did pretty good with Gemini,
it seems to be fairly capable and like Microsoft copilot and can do image generation too and is fairly snappy with any task you give it.
Google also offers a paid variant of their AI called Gemini Advanced it's going to set you back $19.99 per month a bit steep for the average user but the free version should suffice for them.
Google is dreaming big with Gemini hoping for it to become a true personal assistant and I think they are a company best aligned to do this with the mass of user data and huge ecosystem already in place.
