I would rightfully say that our present educational system does not suit our present society and this is because the world that we are living in has so far seen three economic revolutions and they are as follows:
(1) The Industrial Economic Revolution,
(2) The Information or IT Economic Revolution and
(3) The Social or Digital Economic Revolution.
The current educational system we are presently using in our society was designed or derived out of the then needs of the industrial economic revolution era when factories for production were the trend and the factories needed some kind of professional workforce to sustain the administration and operation of those factories.
Interestingly, the educational system back then capitalized on the needs and started training people towards the main purpose of working in those factories. Unfortunately, it is still this same educational system from the industrial economic revolution era that we are currently using in our schools today, even when the economy of the society has migrated to other economic revolutions.
Today, we are in different economic revolution called the SOCIAL OR DIGITAL REVOLUTION. This was enabled by the previous economic revolution called the Information or IT Revolution where people wanted to be independent and work for themselves in one form or the other as entrepreneurs.
Statistics clearly shows that there are more people working for themselves as entrepreneurs in this present economic revolution called the Social or digital revolution than in past industrial economic resolution era when the current educational system we are using in our society presently was formed.
Currently, there is now a new form of entrepreneurs called ‘infopreneurs’ that is trending in our society. These ‘infopreneurs’ were aided and made possible by the foundations created by the previous economic revolution called information or IT revolution. The current economic revolution which is the social or digital revolution gives them the ideal platform to establish and operate successfully. In the society we live in today, there is so much availability of information unlike during the era of industrial economic revolution and these available information most times comes for free. Right now, you can learn almost everything for free or with a little amount of money on YouTube or on so many other sites on internet.
Unfortunately, the current educational system in our schools today which is called Formal Education does not prepare someone to become self- employed, to make money or to become an employer of labour after graduation but to look for job opportunities instead of creating one. I say vehemently that our present educational system does not suit our present society in the sense that in some under developed part of the world high level of research is less or not encouraged, obsolete information is being passed from teachers to students; this is so heart breaking! Some of the lecturers and teachers in some institution of higher learning and in primary and secondary schools in those under - developed world are obsolete in their knowledge and have refused to welcome and embrace the all-encompassing current trends of global educational system
Conclusively, to solve this problem, the current educational system in our society today should be revised on a regular basis in order to inculcate in their curricular for courses of study, the basic information and trainings required to set up and successfully manage and sustain businesses in the student’s field of study with the general hope of making a profit and subsequently creating employment opportunities for others.
This would go a long way to improving the general economic livelihood of the society.
