Well well, look at this. It feels like it has been ages since I have done a #whoareyoulisteningto post. With and I having been on vacation the past couple of weeks, it isn't that we haven't been listening to music, I just haven't had the time to write about it.
I am in the middle of a great series chronicling our recent travels, but I felt I needed to take a break from that to finally do one of these posts. I love sharing the music I am currently listening to and I love being introduced to the stuff that my readers are listening to.
I have been listening to a lot of Eric Church lately. My wife and I were lucky enough to see him in concert a year or so ago and it was an absolutely fantastic show. Up until that concert, I was only familiar with his album tracks that were played on the radio.
I was blow away by how much better he is live. That is saying a lot too, because his radio singles are great. He definitely has a lot more energy in a live setting and his songs take on much "rockier" (is that a term?) feel.
If you get the chance he has a series of albums on Spotify called "61 Days in Church". It is all recordings from live shows and like I said the energy is much higher in these songs than the original album cuts.
The video above is from one of my favorite songs of his and even better than that, it was recorded at one of my bucket list venues... Red Rocks. I hope when all of this Covid stuff is over I get a chance to see a live show at Red Rocks some day. I don't even care who it is, I just want to be there.
I've also been listening to a lot of rap music on Sirius/XM. I am talking old school rap, specifically the stuff that they play on the LL Cool J curated Rock the Bells Radio. It is a really awesome station.
This morning they were playing a nice selection of social conscious songs including one from the man himself LL Cool J.
Not the one I shared above though. I shared that one because "Loungin" is probably one of my favorite LL Cool J songs. I really wish I had been into rap music in the early days when all of this stuff was coming out and it was fresh and new.
That doesn't mean I don't still appreciate it in 2020!
Finally, keeping in a similar vein, I have been listening to a lot of MFSB this morning. You see, one of the cool things about that radio show I had on during my morning commute is they weren't just talking about the rap songs, they were also talking about the tracks that the DJ's sampled for the song.
MFSB was highly sampled by a large number of DJ's for their songs back in the day. I felt it was important to throw back to the roots and really appreciate where some of those smooth grooves and sick beats came from.
So there you go, I know this one is short, but I promise I will be more regular with these from now on. Every Friday as often as I can.
If you have been listening to something awesome, share it with me in a comment. Better yet, write your own Hive post and use the #whoareyoulisteningto tag!
