Una caminata por el centro de la ciudad un domingo por la tarde no suele ser la opción más común para muchas personas aquí en Ciudad Bolívar (Venezuela), la capital de un estado que se caracteriza por un clima bastante cálido y un poco más para estas temporadas de verano. Los ríos y los parques suelen ser los mejores lugares a considerar, por lo cual el salir un poco de ese guión no es del todo malo, y en mi caso dicha elección me pareció muy interesante. "El paseo Orinoco", así se llama la parte de la ciudad en donde se encuentran ubicados la mayoría de los negocios y centros comerciales, con la peculiaridad de tener al lado un paisaje espectacular con el Río Orinoco en plan protagónico.
En la parte alta del paseo Orinoco se encuentran casas que todavía mantienen la esencia clásica de tiempos de antaño. La catedral y otros lugares históricos están en el centro del paseo, una zona rodeada de muchas casas en las que al caminar fácilmente tu mente podría hacer una especie de viaje al pasado. Normalmente los domingos la zona comercial no es tan activa, y en horas de la tarde fácilmente se pueden contar las personas que andan caminando por el lugar. Ya en la calle principal puedes ver más de cerca toda la zona conocida como "el mirador", desde donde se pueden captar varios enfoques del Río Orinoco con el puente Angostura en el fondo.
A stroll through the city centre on a Sunday afternoon isn’t usually the most common choice for many people here in Ciudad Bolívar (Venezuela), the capital of a state known for its fairly warm climate, which gets even hotter during the summer months. Rivers and parks are usually the best places to consider, so straying a little from that routine isn’t a bad thing at all, and in my case, I found that choice very interesting. ‘El Paseo Orinoco’ is the name of the part of the city where most of the shops and shopping centres are located, with the unique feature of having a spectacular landscape right next to it, with the Orinoco River taking centre stage.
At the upper end of the Orinoco promenade, there are houses that still retain the classic charm of days gone by. The cathedral and other historic sites are located in the centre of the promenade, an area surrounded by many houses where, as you walk, your mind can easily be transported back in time. On Sundays, the shopping area is usually not very busy, and in the afternoon you can easily count the number of people strolling around. Once on the main street, you can get a closer look at the whole area known as ‘the viewpoint’, from where you can capture various views of the Orinoco River with the Angostura Bridge in the background.
De más está decir que ahora el calor está en un punto alto, y a pesar de tener el río prácticamente al lado, en horas de la tarde todavía se percibe una fuerte humedad como si emanara un vapor desde el propio río. Ya para el atardecer es que se puede sentir una leve brisa que por momentos espanta el calor pero de manera general el clima se mantiene caliente. Quizás alguien pudiera pensar en la idea de bajar y meterse en el río pero todos sabemos que eso sería un gran peligro por la profundidad y la corriente tan fuerte que caracterizan al Río Orinoco. Por lo tanto, la mejor decisión es encontrar un buen lugar a lo largo de todo el mirador y disfrutar de ese paisaje único que en cada atardecer se presenta de manera muy llamativa.
Estos son los meses en los que más se puede disfrutar de una tarde tranquila caminando por el paseo Orinoco, ya que después del mes de Mayo los pescadores empiezan a surcar las aguas del Orinoco con más frecuencia. Luego, en los meses de Julio la intensidad aumenta para que en los meses de Agosto y Septiembre se empiece a celebrar en la ciudad la conocida "Feria de la Sapoara", una celebración en honor a este pez que desde hace mucho tiempo se ha convertido en un emblema gastronómico y cultural de esta ciudad. Incluso hasta varios cuentos y leyendas se han inspirado en ellas, dando cabida hasta creencias como la de "Si te comes la cabeza de la Sapoara, ya nunca más te irás de esta ciudad".
Needless to say, the heat is at its peak right now, and despite having the river practically on our doorstep, in the afternoon there is still a heavy humidity, as if steam were rising from the river itself. Come evening, a light breeze can be felt, which at times provides some relief from the heat, but generally speaking the weather remains hot. Perhaps someone might be tempted to go down and take a dip in the river, but we all know that would be extremely dangerous due to the depth and the strong current that characterise the Orinoco River. Therefore, the best option is to find a good spot along the viewing platform and enjoy that unique landscape, which presents itself in such a striking way every evening.
These are the best months to enjoy a peaceful afternoon strolling along the Orinoco promenade, as after May the fishermen begin to take to the waters of the Orinoco more frequently. Then, in July, the activity picks up, leading up to the city’s famous ‘Feria de la Sapoara’ in August and September, a festival honouring this fish which has long been a gastronomic and cultural emblem of the city. Even several stories and legends have been inspired by them, giving rise to beliefs such as “If you eat the head of the sapoara, you will never leave this city again”.
Extrañamente la tarde se cubrió de algunas nubes que por momentos solo parecen adornar el cielo ya que el calor sigue siendo el mismo. Lo peculiar y a la vez especial del paseo Orinoco es que de principio a fin de puede ver la inmensidad de un río que aún en sus niveles más bajos no deja de ser una belleza natural totalmente única. Un paseo bajo el atardecer también parece ser la receta ideal para dejar atrás el estrés de la misma ciudad que a veces no nos da tiempo para pausar y ver lo que prácticamente tenemos frente a nosotros día a día. En mi caso me gustan mucho los ríos y poder nadar en ellos, pero sé que aquí no puedo considerar esa opción. Aún así, he aprendido que desde afuera también se puede disfrutar mucho al contemplar los distintos escenarios en los que el río y el ocaso del día se combinan y dan vida a un espacio de tiempo tan valioso como inigualable.
Strangely, the afternoon was dotted with a few clouds that, at times, seem merely to adorn the sky, as the heat remains just as intense. What is both peculiar and special about the Orinoco cruise is that, from start to finish, you can see the immensity of a river which, even at its lowest levels, remains a truly unique natural beauty. A cruise at sunset also seems to be the ideal way to leave behind the stress of city life, which sometimes leaves us no time to pause and appreciate what is practically right in front of us every day. Personally, I love rivers and swimming in them, but I know that’s not an option here. Even so, I’ve learnt that you can still enjoy yourself immensely from the banks, taking in the different scenes where the river and the setting sun combine to create a moment in time that is as precious as it is unrivalled.
