Education is said to be “the key to success in the future.” Is this saying right or it used to be right? I never knew education was in different forms until I was educated about it. Education could be formal or informal and every human passes the informal education before going through the formal education processes.
Formal education occurs in the four walls of a school or organized institution meant for educating individuals while informal education starts from home, workshops and society at large.
It's often said, “Charity begins at home”, so I would begin my discussion about education from home. It's also said that “Education never ends” meaning that we can't say that parents, schools or society are the only ones left with the role of educating a child. Education is a collective effort and can occur anywhere and anytime.
Let me begin with the home(parents). Parents are the very first teachers of their child(ren) before any other person or body gets in. Parents are the core educators of a child. Many children fail to fulfill their destinies because of their homes, and their poor backgrounds with parents who don't know the importance of proper home training.
Believe it or not, a large percentage of individuals who’ve contributed to the vices in society are from bad homes without proper parenting. Just imagine a child whose parents can't cooperate to provide for his needs but always quarreling and fighting. What do you think would be the fate of such a child? He would one day leave his uncomfortable home atmosphere and join street boys who don't have good dreams to make it in life rather than armed robbery and pocket-picking.
What am I trying to say, parents are the beginner-educator of every child before school or society does, and if the home(parents) fails, it will cost the other educational structures a lot to restore the missed opportunity for the individual(s).
For me, I feel home(parents) is the first “school” with parents as the educators. This form of education is termed informal as no certificate of completion of education is offered after learning from parents and it can last for as long as the parents live. I still see my parents learning from my grandparents even today, so education has no bounds(place bounds, time bounds or individual bounds).
Then when we talk about school as a structure of education, I feel it's secondary to home, meaning that school is where an individual acquires formal education after getting the basic education from home (parents).
Schools in this case could be Primary and Secondary schools, Religious schools, Football and other skills acquisition centers. In these places, an individual is trained in certain areas of human profession and their moral life and discipline are never compromised. Let's take a higher institution for instance, in a university an individual will be educated in a particular field of study and at the same time trained to abstain from certain immoral activities like cultism, and theft as measures to check them are set. In schools, individuals are taught everything they need about their future profession as well as things of life as they move to the outside world.
Just like I said earlier, these three bodies (parents, school and society) all work together to ensure the full education of an individual. None of them can be singled out as being solely responsible for the education of persons, they are collectively working together.
When we talk about society, it engulfs everywhere outside of the home, our community, state, country, continent and universe generally.
It's after an individual has been educated about the things of life in schools that he comes to practice them in society. Society is left to correct individuals when they fail at the same time, the individual is learning.
Most civil problems that occur in our society are a result of a lack of proper education and needed discipline at the right time. Most schools these days only teach children and students “English and Maths”, which is very bad. Education should be circled in every area of life, from the proposed profession to a disciplined lifestyle. Teachers are an amazing group of people, I don't fail to celebrate, they have made the world what it is today. Guess what, a teacher taught someone to also become a teacher and the cycle goes on, so teachers make teachers and education then never ends.
