What kind of human being would glue a kitten to the road?
No, not the kitten in this photo,
but on Facebook, a real-life writer friend shared the unbelievable story of her husband getting honked at by angry drivers for stopping traffic to free a kitten someone had glued to the road.
October 19
So I’m driving down the road this morning and the cars in front of me are driving over a black thing in the road. It’s going between their tires so I’m guessing it’s a box. It’s a kitten just sitting upright shaking like a leaf. And some asshole had spread glue on its paws and stuck it to the road. I thought maybe it walked through glue somewhere but after looking at it, that was totally spread into her paws. She was wet and freezing and literally glued to the road.
And NO ONE STOPPED. 😳 What the f$&k people??? I slammed on my brakes and stopped all the traffic and put my hazards on and got out and peeled her off the road. People were honking and all pissy....really??? It’s a kitten glued to the road!!
So after a goo-gone bath and some food and cream we have a new kitten. Luckiest kitten in the world!
Why doesn't cancer, like a heat-seeking missile,
seek out and destroy the sick people who do stuff like that?
No use asking why. All we can do is do .... seek to undo the harm others do. Do good.
And find ways to stop those who do ill.
If I were to come across the guy gluing the kitten to the road, could I stop myself from accelerating in his direction? (I could, Reason #1 being it could put me in jail or cost me my drivers license or anyone willing to sell me insurance. But if I could get away with it... would I aim my car at the person gluing the kitten to the road?)
Instead of picturing this,
I must picture the Good Samaritan who saves the kitten,
someone like this:

Because good people do exist.
And people who do bad things might be salvageable.
Rehabilitation
has to be possible. Reform. Redemption. That was the message of so many great Russian novels, such as "Crime and Punishment." Raskolnikov brutally murdered his mean old land-lady, but he was rehabilitated! This is not just a fiction. People do change. Right?
There's a book about ten felons or bad-ass guys who reformed (all ten cases needed Jesus as their catalyst):
Sons of Grace by Mark Hughes
The pastor who allegedly murdered my sister
is the man who gave a copy of this book to a journalist-friend who lived in the same town, until the cold case heated up and the pastor fled to Vegas. I have since bought copies of this book and sent them to friends who wonder, as I do, if bad-asses ever really change.
As one Amazon reviewer notes:
That fellow, Ron Gruber, goes on speaking engagements around the country, telling his story. Is it not better for him to be walking free among us, as long as he is remorseful and trying to atone for his sins and trying to exhort others to stay out of trouble, to not go there the way he did?
As . founder of
, has noted many times, violent crime against innocent people often begins with torture of innocent animals. She has seen countless examples of it, stuff that makes cynics and even misanthropy -- a generalized hatred, dislike, distrust or contempt for human nature or even the entire human race. It happens, when people witness too much evil.
Secret Garden: The TARC Trail Project
There are Holocaust survivors who somehow retained faith in humanity, in God, in the goodness of the universe. There's Dr. Libby McGugan, whose outlook on life I've admired and blogged about repeatedly.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
Solomon so memorably said (Psalm 23:6).

Make that my motto
and make me remember this when I come across stories of kittens glued to the highway, children murdered by their parents, young women like my sister raped, strangled, and disposed of like roadside trash, and local police who not only cover up evidence to protect the criminals but all too often are themselves the perps of heinous crimes.
The man who rescued that kitten writes,
WOW!!! I am crazy humbled by the response to finding this kitten. I’ve gotten emails and comments from all over the world. What I’ve learned most from this is that people REALLY need some good news right now:
