When I first retired from the military I did a gig substitute teaching. I did it one day and I never did it again. When they called me and asked if I would like to do it again I said no. I think it was a combination of the kids being terribily behaved and me being recently out of the military just didn't go well together. Now I think it might be different and I would be a little more patient, but I don't know. Wish I could give you some ideas on what do do from home, but at a loss unless you have tech skills. If you do, there is usually plenty of remote support roles available, but I am not sure they pay very well.
As far as the attention economy, I hear you there. It seems everything begs for our attention theese days and none of it really worth our time after we spend it, or so it seems. Like you I would like to increase my reading. I have let that slide and don't like it. But have had a hard time focusing especially the last year or so.
I do wish you the best in the coming year.
