And there's nothing better than a visit to a neighboring country whose currency is devalued to make you feel like a prince wasting your wealth! Let's get to know the Argentines' drama?!
Context
Argentina is a South American country that has been suffering from uncontrolled inflation for some time. In the last twelve months alone, the country has accumulated 140% inflation in the period, which guarantees the top of the G20 ranking, the group of twenty. The data are from Poder 360.
With each passing day, the Peso, Argentina's fiat currency, loses its value even more. At today's official exchange rate, USD 1 buys ARS 363. At the street, day-to-day exchange rate, USD 1 buys ARS_PA 884. The difference is absurd!
The feeling I noticed on the streets of Argentina (I was there on December 3rd) is that no one wants to hold the weight of Peso in their hands (pun intended in Portuguese, sorry if it's not understandable in English). Argentines want Reais BRL and Dollar USD. They make any deal to exchange their currency for another that does not lose its value with each night of sleep.
Migration Registration
It is a tradition for us, residents of the border region, to make biannual visits to the neighboring country. Brazil and Argentina have many kilometers of dry border. Access to MercoSul countries (Group of countries led by Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile) is facilitated in the sense of reducing bureaucracy. Using only your national identification document, you can legally enter these countries, with your registration being done in minutes at customs.
Supermarkets
The first stop upon disembarking on Argentine border soil is a visit to the supermarket. There we can see that there are many nationally produced items whose value is extremely cheap, compared to similar items in Brazil.
Some items whose value on Argentine shelves is much lower than in Brazil:
- Deodorants
- Powdered milk for newborns
- Washing powder
- Detergent
- Perfumery
- Diapers
- Olive oil
- Meat in general
- Sausages
- Shrimp
- Cheeses in general
But these small purchases are not the main reason for my visit. I want to talk about pricing in the next section.
Wines
I really like to take advantage of the trip to replenish my wine supply.

Due to the purchase of more than ten bottles, the price seen on the label will be reduced by 10%. The exchange rate for the day was determined by the supermarket, that is, I did not exchange it. I paid in Reais, at a rate of BRL 1 to ARG_PA 160. A little more expensive than the exchange rate on the day which was around BRL 1 to ARG_PA 180.
In the table, the second BRL value has the discount applied and rounded. I did not buy Catena Zapata wine, it is for reference only.
Sparkling wines
Here's the reason for our trip: drinks for the end of year festivities. I mentioned in another post that we will receive visitors for Christmas dinner, so we need to be prepared!
Christmas dinner is a family classic and requires the consumption of different sparkling wines, which in Brazil can be a little salty to buy! The brand sought after Frexenet was unavailable due to high demand, and was soon replaced by another well-known brand of the house, Cordero con piel de lobo, as we are already customers of the wines. We decided to get some sparkling wines:
The unit price paid was BRL 17, a fixed promotional price. We opted for four demi sec bottles, one extra brut bottle and I insisted on getting a dulce bottle, which was in "my personal quota", that is, it is not accepted in the traditional supper hahaha!
For comparison purposes, if you were to buy it on the Brazilian market, a cheap option would be Aurora Moscatel, the bottle and two glasses would cost BRL 69. I suppose the bottle alone is around BRL 40.
Fuels
Argentine fuel is also cheaper, although I didn't fill up my vehicle this month.Act, I know that the approximate value of the equivalent of type C gasoline was around BRL 4, while in Brazil we have BRL 5.75.
I will not comment on this topic as I need more data.
Conclusion
When it comes to drinks, it’s much cheaper to buy them in Argentina. But this is not a general rule, some drinks in Argentina can be as expensive as in Brazil. I brought an example:

E nada melhor do que uma visitinha ao país vizinho cuja moeda é desvalorizada para você se sentir um príncipe esbanjando sua riqueza! Bora conhecer o drama dos Argentinos?!
Contexto
A Argentina é um pais da América do Sul que sofre com o descontrole da inflação já a algum tempo. Só nos últimos doze meses, o país acumula 140% de inflação no período, o que garante o topo do ranking do G20, o grupo dos vinte. Os dados são do Poder 360.
A cada dia que passa, o Peso, moeda fiduciária Argentina, perde ainda mais o seu valor. Na cotação oficial de hoje, USD 1 compra ARS 363. Na cotação da rua, do dia-a-dia, USD 1 compra ARS_PA 884 . A diferença é absurda!
O sentimento que percebi nas ruas da Argentina (estive lá no dia 03 de dezembro) é de que ninguém quer manter nas mãos o peso do Peso (trocadilho em português, perdão caso não seja compreensível em inglês). Os argentinos querem Reais BRL e Dollar USD. Fazem qualquer negócio para trocar sua moeda por outra que não perca seu valor a cada noite de sono.
Registro Migratório
É uma tradição para nós, moradores da região de fronteira, realizar visitas semestrais ao país vizinho. O Brasil e a Argentina possuem muitos quilômetros de fronteira seca. O acesso aos países do MercoSul (Grupo de países liderado pelo Brasil, Argentino, Uruguai, Paraguai e Chile), é facilitado no sentido de desburocratização. Utilizando apenas seu documento de identificação nacional é possível ingressar de forma legal dentro destes países, com seu registro sendo feito em minutos na própria alfandega.
Supermercados
A primeira parada ao desembarcar em solo argentino de fronteira é uma visita ao supermercado. Lá poderemos ver que existem muitos itens de produção nacional cujo valor é extremamente barato, se comparado aos similares no Brasil.
Alguns itens cujo valor nas prateleiras argentinas é muito mais baixo que no Brasil:
- Desodorantes
- Leite em pó para recém nascidos
- Sabão em pó
- Detergente
- Perfumaria
- Fraldas
- Azeite de oliva
- Carnes em geral
- Embutidos
- Camarão
- Queijos em geral
Mas essas pequenas compras não são o principal motivo da minha visita. Quero falar de preços na próxima seção.
Vinhos
Eu gosto mesmo é de aproveitar a viagem para repor o estoque de vinhos.

Devido a termo comprado acima de dez garrafas, o preço visto na etiqueta será abatido em 10%. A cotação do dia foi determinada pelo supermercado, ou seja, não realizei o câmbio. Paguei em Reais, na cotação de BRL 1 para ARG_PA 160. Um pouco mais caro do que o câmbio do dia que era em torno de BRL 1 para ARG_PA 180.
Na tabela, o segundo valor BRL está com o desconto aplicado e arredondado. Eu não comprei o vinho Catena Zapata, é apenas para referência.
Espumantes
Eis o motivo de nossa viagem: as bebidas para as festas de fim de ano. Comentei em outra postagem que receberemos visitantes para a ceia de natal, então precisamos estar preparados!
A ceia de natal é um clássico familiar e exige o consumo de espumantes diversos, o que no Brasil pode ser um pouco salgado de se comprar! A marca procurada Frexenet estava indisponível devido à alta demanda, e foi logo substituída por outra marca conhecida da casa, Cordero con piel de lobo, pois já somos clientes dos vinhos. Resolvemos pegar alguns espumantes:
O valor unitário pago foi de BRL 17, preço fixo promocional. Optamos por quatro garrafas demi sec, uma garrafa extra brut e eu insisti em pegar uma garrafa dulce, que ficou na "minha cota pessoal", ou seja, não é aceita na ceia tradicional hahaha!
Para fins de comparação, se fosse comprar no mercado brasileiro uma opção barata seria Aurora Moscatel, a garrafa e duas taças sairiam por BRL 69. Somente a garrafa suponho que esteja em torno de BRL 40.
Combustíveis
O combustível argentino também é mais barato, apesar de eu não ter abastecido meu veículo nesta viagem, sei que o valor aproximado do equivalente à gasolina tipo C estava em torno de BRL 4, enquanto no brasil estamos com BRL 5,75.
Não vou comentar sobre este tema pois preciso de mais dados.
Conclusão
No quesito bebidas, é muito mais barato adquirir na Argentina. Mas isso não é uma regra geral, algumas bebidas na Argentina podem ser tão caras quanto no Brasil. Trouxe um exemplo:
