Thank you for coming back to my Blog, today I’m taking you on a new adventure to discover the island of Ortigia, in the province of Syracuse (Southern Italy).
In particular, I was lucky enough to visit the underground city and I discovered an incredible world!

Grazie per essere tornati sul mio Blog, oggi vi porto in una nuova avventura alla scoperta dell’isola di Ortigia, in provincia di Siracusa (Sud Italia).
In particolare, ho avuto la fortuna di visitare la città sotterranea e ho scoperto un mondo incredibile!

The island of Ortigia is the oldest part of Syracuse and its extension is about 1 square km.
It has a truly unique geographical conformation, because it is completely bathed by salt water from the sea, but fresh water also flows underneath, thanks to a water table coming from the Iblei mountains.
In ancient times, different populations followed one another: Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Arabs. Each of them left traces of their passage, making the city rich in different artistic styles that mix together with spectacular results.
L’isola di Ortigia è la parte più antica di Siracusa e la sua estensione è di circa 1 km quadrato.
Ha una conformazione geografica davvero unica, perché è completamente bagnata dall’acqua salata del mare, ma al di sotto scorre anche l’acqua dolce, grazie a una falda freatica proveniente dai monti Iblei.
Nell’antichità si sono susseguite diversi popoli: greci, romani, bizantini e arabi. Ognuno di loro ha lasciato tracia del proprio passaggio, rendendo la città ricca di stili artistici diversi che si mescolano insieme con risultato spettacolare.
After the flight, as soon as I arrived, I immediately began to visit the surroundings of the island, walking around to fully appreciate its beauties. The most interesting monuments are the Cathedral, the Monastery and the famous Castello Maniace.
The first day was dedicated to visiting the churches, places rich in history and social importance. In particular, the first one I visited was the Church of San Filippo Apostolo with a guided tour of underground Ortigia.
The peculiarity of this church lies in the fact that it hosts an intricate path of underground tunnels, forming a network that, in terms of extension, is second only to that of Rome!
This network is able to connect all the sacred and institutional places of the ancient city, allowing you to walk the entire perimeter without ever coming out into the sunlight.
Dopo il viaggio in aereo, appena arrivata, ho cominciato subito a visitare i dintorni dell’isola, girando a piedi per apprezzare a pieno le sue bellezze. I monumenti più interessanti sono il Duomo, il Monastero e il famoso Castello Maniace.
Il primo giorno è stato dedicato alla visita delle chiese, luoghi ricchi di storia e di importanza sociale. In particolare, la prima che ho visitato è stata la Chiesa di San Filippo Apostolo con un tour guidato di Ortigia sotterranea.
La particolarità di questa chiesa risiede nel fatto che ospita un intricato percorso di tunnel sotterranei, formando una rete che, come estensione è seconda solo a quella di Roma!
Questa rete è in grado di collegare tutti i luoghi sacri e istituzionali della città antica, permettendo di percorrere interamente il perimetro senza mai uscire alla luce del sole.

These undergrounds also host catacombs, air raid shelters and spiritual baths.
The citizens of Ortigia took refuge in this place during the Second World War and even today you can see writings, drawings and objects that testify to their passage.
In questi sotterranei sono ospitati anche catacombe, rifugi antiaerei e bagni spirituali.
I cittadini di Ortigia si ripararono in questo luogo durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale e ancora oggi sono visibili scritte, disegni e oggetti che testimoniano il passaggio.
