I have a street brother who was an excellent student and excelled in every aspect of his studies. After serving our country, he dreamed of working for a company in Nigeria. Unfortunately, when he applied, they didn't find him a job. He chose to wait and apply for the company instead.
He did not apply for another job. He was so focused on getting his dream job, doing all the research, and making sure he was the perfect candidate for the job. When he reapplied, they did not give him the and he wasted three years of his life waiting for just one job.
During our conversation, he mentioned that even if he were to secure an underpaying job, he wouldn't be able to dedicate enough time to pursue his dream job. Therefore, he focused all his energy on obtaining a job that would lift him out of poverty.
I did not completely disagree with him because there is an element of truth in what he is saying, but I did not completely agree. I believe he should have done better, he does not use his most important resource well which is time.
Availability creates no availability
In many countries, including Nigeria, employers often expect their employees to fully devote themselves to their job. This leaves very little time for personal pursuits and can make it difficult to search for new opportunities or seek out better employment.
Many people settle for low-paying jobs to make ends meet and fulfill their basic needs but this makes it challenging for them to explore new opportunities or search for higher paying jobs. As a result, they end up sacrificing their personal growth and well-being just to meet their basic needs.
Not about the jobs
My street brother did not want to settle for low-paying jobs just because he felt that he would not have time to explore the market for opportunities and sometimes could be right but I believe he should have done better by still managing the low-paying jobs that created time for him to exploit the market.
Why do most people fall victim to a job that does not create time for them is because When we are seeking a job, we are always desperate, and We go for what we see, and not what want because there is no option while getting what we see, we don't always consider the long-term effect the job could have on us.
Know what you want
In my opinion, it's not ideal to sit around and wait for a job to come to us but also jumping into a dead-end job that doesn't allow for growth and exploration isn't the answer either. The best thing to do is to take a job that allows for some flexibility and gives us the time to pursue additional opportunities.
We must never let the desperation of seeking jobs allow us to take a job that won't favor us, and also, we must never let seeking our dream job stop us from doing anything. We must always use our best resources which are time very well.
