Nº#10 | What is culture?
"Transmit culture to the whole world, without distinction of race or category." —Analectas.
Culture is visible everywhere we go. We see culture in countries, cities and even in the smallest neighborhoods. We see cultural manifestations all around us at home, and we see this culture as we move towards the art we create.
When we speak of culture, the SAR defines it as: a set of ways of life and customs, knowledge and degree of artistic, scientific and industrial development in an era, a social group, etc. Source.
In this sense we can define culture more broadly as those thoughts, situations and behaviors that are shared in a society as a whole. This term also contains many concepts such as personal culture, that is to say, the human being can interrelate in one way or another in different spheres by developing different modes of culture. An example of this can be seen in today's youth where, despite being born under one culture, we adopt certain spheres from others and create our new hybrid cultural process between one and the other, applying different ways of thinking as necessary.
Thus, we can also speak of a more developed concept of culture towards the sphere of the tools used within a society, as well as towards behaviour, where one or the other is seen and used according to the sphere and society in which you are born, and these tools prevail in that social group. An example of this can be the villages far from the big cities, which even in the 21st century, still preserve certain tools, clothes and customs that have not changed anything over the years.
Taking this into account, we can say that culture can be represented in three spheres, such as Knowledge, behavior and/or artefacts used by it, in which one needs the presence of the other to coexist.

We usually refer to the expression of the human being, everything material, artistic, technological, spiritual, intellectual, manual, among many other things, in short, everything that man does and expresses in society, is culture.
When we seek to create culture by asking ourselves many questions, one of them is: When a being becomes culturally active, do I really make culture, to which this fragment of an article responds:
«When the mother gives birth to him, this new human being is not left to his own devices either. It is immediately surrounded by a new matrix, which is no longer physical but social and cultural. The mother and her immediate family continue to play a key role in this. But from there it opens up to wider and wider circles: the rest of the family, the school, the church, the community, the neighbourhood, the town or city and that window to the whole world that is the media. All of this constitutes the social and cultural landscape in which your life will develop; all of this is the cultural matrix that makes your life and development possible.»Source.
And analyzing the previous fragment, we come to the conclusion that every human being is culturally active, that there are no uneducated people, that it is impossible for a being born in nothingness not to have culture, since, as we have already said, we see culture as everything learned by man.

"Man creates culture and through culture creates himself."
Cultural manifestations in art.
Now, culture acts on society, so it also acts on art. Many artistic manifestations have been very attached to the cultural manifestations of each nation or ethnic group. The rock art in the caves of Altamira and the ornaments and creations of the Mayan culture are just a small sample of this. Human beings have always sought ways to manifest themselves through artistic creation.

Cultural manifestations in art have not only come in the field of plastic arts, we have also seen them very close to music, dance, literature and even in the cinema, however these manifestations are more prominent in the visual arts. Therefore, through the use of art, the human being has had the capacity to express a long history of our land in which we can understand the course of it and feel in a closer way all that happens.
Although both terms are used in different ways, they tend to be closer than one might think, seeking to identify life and society. Culture acts as the catalyst of human thought and its events, acts and thoughts; art generates expression and conception based on the diversity of factors, symbols and techniques capable of materializing the author's creativity.
So, what now?
The link between culture and art has defined the constant changes in the generalised society. Just as culture should not be seen only as a means of expanding a way of life and its history, so art should not be seen only as a means of satisfaction and contemplation for the public, but also as a means of promoting the balance and evolution of society.
We would like to end with a phrase very related to the theme ¨recibo with gratitude what the past gives me, I transform it for good and I give it generously to the future. ¨
