Yesterday I was discovering Camagüey.
Currently, I am doing a PhD in art sciences at the ISA University of the Arts.
As part of this PhD, I had to travel to the city of Camagüey to give a presentation at an international scientific event that is taking place in this province.
But the presentation is the least of it right now (I did very well ☺️).
What I want to share with you are these wonders that I found during my short stay in the city.
The discussions of the papers were held in this beautiful place. This is the “Office of the Historian of the city”.
Just look at this beauty.
This is a classic construction from the time of the Spanish colony. Look at this rectangular shape of the building with the open space in the center.
Usually, in the center of this space the water wells were opened. This building does not have one, but it does have the characteristic Camagüeyan tinajones.
Although it has been restored over the years, it still retains the original design of the carpentry and the garden.
I look at these hallways and imagine the inhabitants of that time having great parties in this house.
I couldn't walk around the city much 😞. I didn't have much free time. However, on my morning getaway I was able to find this wonderful installation.

The first ones are three ladies chatting, like any other morning, while having coffee.
Look at this level of detail. They are timeless Cuban women, they could well be from the colonial period or from the present.

Perhaps that is why they left this fourth chair empty: so that we can sit down and complete the picture and contextualize the work.
You can see that in the background there are other installations.
These are huge cauldrons.
And behind me you can see a man dragging some jugs of water on a wheelbarrow.
But the one that moved me the most was this couple in love.
Just look at the expression on their faces. Look at that detail in their eyes, in their clothes, in the position of their arms.
And to top it off, look at the message on the lighter they are holding in their hands: Touch me! I will give you light.
The golden color of the flame is due to the fact that everyone who passes by the square touches the flame in search of that light, of that promised luck.
I was also lucky to find this culinary tasting just before leaving for home.
In the middle of the street, a huge table where a tasting was taking place, which at the same time It served as the final exam for the culinary school in Camagüey.
Although they had a professional jury, I think there is no better jury than the public they serve. And if these are children, the merit is greater, since they are the most demanding judges.
Without a doubt, Camagüey is a city that I have to return to.
If I could discover these wonders in just a few hours, imagine if I took the whole day to walk the whole thing.

Ayer estuve descubriendo Camagüey.
En la actualidad, estoy haciendo el doctorado en ciencias sobre arte, en la Universidad de las artes ISA.
Como parte de este doctorado, tuve que viajar a la ciudad de Camagüey para realizar una ponencia en un evento científico internacional que se realiza en esta provincia.
Pero la ponencia es lo de menos ahora mismo (salí muy bien ☺️).
Lo que quiero compartirles con ustedes son estas maravillas que me encontré durante mi corta estancia en la ciudad.
Las discusiones de ponencias se realizaron en este hermoso lugar. Esta es la “Oficina del Historiador de la ciudad”.
Miren nada más qué belleza.
Esta es una construcción clásica del tiempo de la colonia española. Vean esta forma rectangular del edificio con el espacio abierto en el centro.
Usualmente, en el centro de este espacio se abrían los pozos de agua. Este edificio no lo tiene, pero sí cuenta con los característicos tinajones camagüeyanos.
A pesar que se ha restaurado en el transcurso de los años, aún conserva el diseño original de la carpintería y el jardín.
Veo estos pasillos y me imagino a los habitantes de aquella época realizando grandes fiestas en esta casa.
No pude caminar mucho por la ciudad 😞. No tuve mucho tiempo libre. Sin embargo, en la escapada que di en la mañana pude encontrar esta maravilla de instalaciones.
Fíjense en estas obras de arte en la “Plaza del Carmen”.

Las primeras, son tres señoras conversando, como una mañana cualquiera, mientras toman el café.
Miren este nivel de detalles. Son mujeres cubanas atemporales, bien podrian ser de la colonia o de la actualidad.
Quizás por eso dejaron esta cuarta silla vacía: para que nos sentemos y completemos el cuadro y contextualicemos la obra.
Vean que al fondo se encuentran otras instalaciones.
Estas son de unos calderos inmensos.
Y a mis espaldas pueden ver a un señor arrastrando unas botijas de agua sobre una carretilla.
Pero la que más me conmovió fue la de esta pareja de enamorados.
Miren nada más la expresión de sus rostros. Miren ese detalle en las miradas, en la ropa, en la posición de sus brazos.
Y para rematar, miren el mensaje en el mechero que llevan en la mano: ¡Tócame! Te daré luz.
El color dorado de la llama se debe a que todo aquel que pasa por la plaza, toca la llama en busca de esa luz, de esa suerte prometida.
Suerte también fue la mía de encontrarme esta degustación culinaria justo antes de partir de regreso a casa.
En plena calle una mesa inmensa donde se realizaba una degustación que a la vez fungía como examen final de la escuela de culinaria de Camagüey.
Aunque tenían un jurado profesional, creo que no hay mejor jurado que el público al que les sirven. Y si estos son niños, el mérito es mayor, ya que son los jurados más exigentes.
Sin duda alguna, Camagüey es una ciudad a la que tengo que regresar. Si pude descubrir estas maravillas en solo unas pocas horas, imaginen si me tomara el día para caminarla completa.
Ya tengo en los planes regresar y pronto. Vengan también.
