In Nigeria, we experience two distinct seasons which are the rainy season and the dry season. Our climate is tropical. As its name implies, the rainy season comes with Heavy rainfall that occasionally causes floods, this is a feature of the rainy season, and it normally lasts from April to October.
The two seasons have their advantages as well as disadvantages, some people may love the rainy season while some would prefer the dry season, I would love to bring out the advantages and disadvantages of both
During the rainy season, some areas experience heavy and frequent downpours, this can also come with heavy thunderstorms that can remove the roof of any house and render people homeless, I remember a time that we stayed in a rented apartment with our parents, anytime it rains it would be as if we are having a vigil, we always experience the waterfall from the roof, the house will be soaked with water and we need to put a big bowl in the direction of the water so that we would not have much water to clean.
There was a time I hated the rainy season, my prayer would always be to let this rain not fall because there would be a lot of work for us in the house, the height of it all was when we were sleeping one night and this rainy started in the middle of the night, it was so heavy to the point that our house zinc was removed by breeze, I saw my mother crying that night because we were helpless, no one is ready to come out to assist because of the heavy thunderstorm.
As we are crying some people are rejoicing like the farmers, this period is vital for agriculture, as it supports the growth of crops such as yams, cassava, maize, and rice, which are staples in the Nigerian diet. Farmers rely heavily on the rains to irrigate their fields, and good rainfall can lead to bountiful harvests, boosting the economy and ensuring food security.
The dry season in Nigeria typically lasts from October to April. During this period, the country experiences significantly less or no rainfall, with the harmattan winds blowing from the Sahara Desert in the north, contributing to the dry and dusty conditions.
This period suffers people in the rural areas with no borehole, this is when people experience dryness, and no water at all, even farmers are always suffering in this season, and the economy is always affected by this season, I went to visit my brother's last week and when I got to the street I saw people will lots of buckets moving from one place to another in search of water, this is so terrible in the country now because people who have water always guide it jealousy.
One good thing about the harmattan season is that everywhere will be cool, you will never feel heat, no need for electricity unlike the rainy season that comes with heat and mosquitoes, harmattan season does come with diseases like cold, catarrh, sore throat, and the likes.
In my opinion, I prefer the rainy season to the harmattan season, I always look fresh in this period, I have always been prepared for the rainy season by going out with my umbrella, I have my solar rechargeable fan in case there is no light and the heat is too much for me but there is no way I can prepare for the harmattan season, I always fall sick by dealing with cold, catarrh and sore-throat that would lead me to the pharmacy every year.
This is my response to this week's prompt of the #SciFi community
