Hello dear DIYHUB community, it's a pleasure to be here, virtually, and to be able to share with you my entry for the June contest. I'm very happy that this contest is geared toward the spirit of the community: recycling. I'd been working on a repair project for weeks until I was able to get started and finish it. It took a little while because I couldn't find some materials. My job was to put a new sole on my sneakers. I bought them in August 2022 to play basketball, and they lasted all these years until the sole began to deteriorate. I was mainly looking for shoe glue and a durable rubber for the new sole, so I used car tires, which are very durable, malleable, and easy to use. Here I'll briefly explain the process. I hope you like them and find my idea useful.
Hola querida comunidad DIYHUB, es un placer poder estar aquí, de forma virtual y poder compartir con ustedes mi entrada al concurso del mes de junio, muy contento de que este concurso esté orientado al espíritu de la comunidad: el reciclaje. Estaba trabajando en un proyecto de reparación desde hace semanas, hasta que pude poner manos a la obra para iniciar y terminar, tardé un poco de tiempo porque no encontraba algunos materiales. Mi trabajo fue ponerle una suela nueva a mis zapatos deportivos, los compré en agosto del año 2022 para jugar basket, y duraron todos estos años hasta que la suela comenzó a deteriorarse. Estuve buscando principalmente pegamento para zapatos y una goma resistente para la nueva suela, así que utilicé neumático de automóvil, muy resistente, maleable y fácil de usar, aquí les explico como fue el proceso brevemente, espero les guste y les pueda servir mi idea.

First of all, let me put this in context. I was able to find a photo from when I bought these shoes. They were great, very soft for playing basketball, among the best I've ever bought. As you can see, their sole was made of silicone, which I think held up well to wear since I play on a concrete street court. What I did was replace what was left of that silicone rubber with rubber tire.
Antes que nada, los pongo en contexto, pude encontrar una fotografía de cuando compré estos zapatos, eran geniales muy suaves para jugar basket, de los mejores que he comprado, como pueden observar su suela era de silicón, lo que creo que aguantó mucho el desgaste ya que juego en una cancha callejera de concreto. Lo que hice fue reemplazar lo que quedaba de esa goma de silicón por goma de neumático.

Here you can see the deterioration from play and the passage of time. I started to tear off the silicone rubber in pieces, which fell off easily. However, there were places where the glue was very strong, and I had to use a razor blade to remove it. After removing the rubber, I took some sandpaper and began to clean the entire sole area, removing all impurities, including any dirt that had accumulated. After doing this, I washed the shoes with soap to clean them and so that when I put the sole back on, the glue would hold better.
Aquí ya pueden apreciar, el deterioro del juego y del paso del tiempo, la goma de silicón la fui arrancando por pedazos, se caía facilmente, sin embargo había partes donde estaba muy fuerte el pegamento y tuve que usar una navaja para retirarla. Luego de quitar la goma, tomé una lija y me puse a limpíar toda la zona de la suela, removít todas las impurezas, incluyendo restos de tierra que se iba a acumulando. Despues de hacer esto, le di una lavada con jabon a los zapatos para que quedara limpio y así al poner la suela el pegamento quedaría mejor.

Next, I found the rubber tire. It was too big, so I had to cut it into several pieces. I kept some to fix other shoes I'm working on. With some of the removed parts of the sole, I was able to make a template to use as a guide to draw the new soles. So, I drew them with a marker and then, using scissors, cut them out until I had both soles.
Luego busqué la goma de neumático, era muy grande así que tuve que cortarla en varios trozos, dejé unos para arreglar otros zapatos que tengo pendiente. Con algunas partes de la suela que removí pude hacer una plantilla la cual usar como guía para dibujar las nuevas suelas. Así que las hice con marcador y luego con unas tijeras las fui recortando hasta sacar ambas suelas.

When the shoes were completely dry, I sanded the sole again very well. The goal was to leave it clean and free of traces of the previous sole. I also sanded the insoles I made with the rubber, sanding the area where the glue would go toward the side of the shoe. This is very important; the cleaner the surface, the better the sole will stick.
Cuando los zapatos secaron por completo volví a lijar muy bien la suela, el objetivo es que quede bien limpia y que no hayan restos de la suela anterior. Así también lijé las plantillas que hice con la goma, lijé la parte por donde irá el pegamento hacia el lado del zapato. Es muy importante hacer esto, mientras la superfecie este lo más limpia posible, la suela quedará mejor pegada.

Now comes the moment of truth. Once both surfaces are clean, I begin applying shoe glue to both the bottom of the shoe and the already prepared rubber. I let it dry for about 10 minutes and then gradually apply the rubber to the shoe. I start from the back, where the heel meets, working toward the toe. Little by little, I make sure everything fits snugly.
Ahora viene el momento de la verdad. Una vez esten limpias ambas superficies comienzo a poner pegamento para zapatos tanto en la parte inferior del zapato como en la goma que ya estaba preparada. Dejo secar por unos 10 minutos para luego ir poco a poco poniendo la goma en el zapato, comienzo desde la parte trasera, donde va el talón hacia la punta del zapato, poco a poco me voy asegurando de que todo quede bien ajustado

I did the same process with the other shoe. I applied the glue to the same spot and, after letting it dry for about 10 minutes, joined the two pieces together, starting at the heel and ending at the toe. Then, I used scissors to trim any areas that were sticking out too much. To make it fit more snugly against the sole, I used a razor blade to make the cuts. Finally, I sanded all the edges of the rubber with sandpaper so it wasn't square, but round. This prevents the rubber from peeling off the shoe more quickly when it rubs against the ground.
El mismo proceso hice con el otro zapato, puse el pegamento en el mismo lugar y una vez de haber dejado secar por alrededor de 10 minutos fui uniendo ambas partes desde donde va el talón hasta la punta del zapato. Luego fui recortando con la tijera aquellas partes que sobresalían demasiado, y para que quedara más ajustado a la suela, hice los cortes con una navaja. Para finalizar, con una lija me puse a lijar todos los bordes de la goma para que no quedara cuadrado, sino de forma redonda, esto evita que en la fricción con el suelo la goma vaya a despegarse más rápido del zapato.
FINAL WORK
What do you think of the results? After a couple of hours, I tried the shoes on, and they fit very well. The rubber has enough grip on the ground, and the shoe doesn't feel heavy or anything like that. It feels very light; it really isn't that much of a difference. Now I'll be able to wear them to play basketball again every afternoon, as usual, and I'll see how they hold up to the high impact of exercise. I hope it goes well for me. And I hope you like it. I've shared it with great pleasure and as part of my learning process. Maybe it could be useful to someone else, and thus extend the lifespan of the shoes. I'll say goodbye, until soon.
Qué opinan del resultado? luego de una par de horas probé los zapatos y me quedaron muy bien, la goma tiene suficiente agare en el piso y el zapato no quedó pesado ni nada por el estilo, se siente muy liviano, realmente no es mucha la diferencia. Ahora podré llevarlos de nuevo a jugar basket todas las tardes como es mi costumbre y veré como se comportan al alto impacto del ejercicio, espero que me vaya muy bien. Y espero que a ustedes les haya gustado, lo he compartido como mucho gusto y como parte de mi aprendizaje, tal vez a otra persona le podría servir, y así estirar la vida util de los zapatos, me despido hasta pronto.
