Hello friends, how are you? I hope you're all doing well. The weekend is almost over, and I wanted to share one of my latest projects with you. Lately, I've been focusing solely on drawing due to lack of time, but this week I had a few days off, so I returned to one of my favorite activities. I made a pair of wooden earrings in the shape of sunflowers, one of my favorite flowers. I made them as a gift for my daughter. In addition to the carving, I added paint at the end to give them a better finish. Here's a brief description of the process; I hope you like them.
Hola amigos, que tal? espero que todos se encuentren muy bien, ya finaliza el fin de semana y quiero compartir con ustedes una de mis últimas obras. Últimamente me había enfocado solo en los dibujos porque cuestión de falta de tiempo, pero esta semana pude tener unos días libres así que volví a una de mis actividades favoritas. He realizado un par de aretes tallados en madera, estos aretes tienen la forma de una flor de girasol, una de mis favoritas, las hice como un detalle para mi hija, a parte del tallado agregué pintura al final para darle un mejor acabado, aquí les comento de forma breve como fue el proceso, espero que les guste.
I used a piece of pine wood, 4 centimeters on each side, and divided it with a line to create each sunflower silhouette. To make the silhouette more accurate, I drew a template on paper, which I then carefully cut out. I drew both sunflowers and then proceeded to shape them.
Utilicé un trozo de madera de Pino, de 4 centímetros por cada uno de sus lados, dividí la madera con una línea para hacer cada silueta del girasol. Para hacer la silueta mas exacta dibujé una silueta sobre papel, el cual luego recorté con cuidado para utilizarlo como molde. Dibuje ambos girasoles para luego disponerme a darle forma.
To begin the wood carving process, I first cut all the edges, little by little, using a knife with a wider blade, so the wood cuts faster. I continue this process until I have a circular shape.
Para comenzar con el proceso de tallar la madera, en primer lugar corto todos los bordes, poco a poco utilizando una navaja que tenga la hoja más ancha, así la madera se corta más rápido. Sigo este proceso hasta dejarla en una forma circular.
Next, I change tools and use my wood carving blades, which are smaller and more precise. The movement I make is to remove the empty space between each petal's tip. It's very patient work, so I carefully and gradually remove the wood.
En el siguiente cambio de herramienta y utilizo mis cuchillas para tallar madera, las cuales son más pequeñas y tienen mas precisión en los cortes. El movimiento que hago es extraer el espacio vacío que hay entre cada punta de los pétalos de la flor, es un trabajo muy paciente por lo que voy poco a poco extrayendo la madera con mucha delicadeza.
After cutting off the tips, I focus on shaping each petal. Here, I use a knife with a fine, triangular tip, removing wood along the drawn lines. You can see how the petals gradually emerge. I also create the characteristic sunflower shape in the center. Finally, I sand it to smooth it and refine its shape.
Seguidamente al terminar de cortar las puntas, me concentro en darle forma a cada uno de los pétalos. Aquí lo que hago es utilizar una cuchilla con una punta fina tipo triangulo, con la cual voy extrayendo madera sobre las líneas dibujadas. Aquí pueden observar como poco a poco van saliendo los pétalos. Así también en la parte central voy haciendo esa forma tan característica del girasol. Por último lo que hago es pasarle la lija para limpiarla y darle mejor forma.
Then, with the second flower, I repeat the entire process, first shaping the tips and then shaping each petal. Finally, I sand the piece until both are ready to paint.
Luego con la segunda flor realizo toda la operación anterior, en primer lugar darle forma a las puntas para luego pasar a darle forma cada uno de los pétalos. Por último lijo la pieza hasta tenerlas a ambas listas para pintarlas.
Now for the next and final step: applying the paint. Here I'm using yellow paint and dark brown paint. I was able to buy this yellow paint this week, so today was its first day using it on these earrings. With a very fine brush, I paint the center of the flower, and then with yellow paint, I paint each petal one by one. To finish, I add the pair of hooks, and that's how they're done.
Ahora el siguiente y último paso toca aplicas la pintura, aquí utilizo pintura amarilla y también pintura de color marrón oscuro. Esta pintura amarilla la pude comprar esta semana, así que hoy fue su estreno para utilizarla en estos aretes. Con in pincel muy fino voy pintando el centro de la flor y luego con pintura amarilla voy pintanto uno a uno cada pétalo. Para finalizar agrego entonces el par de ganchos y así han quedado finalizado.
FINAL WORK
What do you think of the result? The great thing about this acrylic paint I bought is that it's somewhat glossy, which makes the finish more beautiful and eye-catching. I just need to apply a protective varnish, but I don't have any at the moment. As soon as I do, I'll apply it, and that way the paint will withstand the test of time better. I hope you liked it. It was a simple but careful process. There's nothing better than maximum concentration, and this is one of the skills that best helps me reach that level of focus. For now, I'll say goodbye and hope to return very soon.
¿Qué les ha parecido el resultado? lo bueno de esta pintura acrílica que compré es que es algo brillante, lo que hace que el acabado sea más hermoso y llamativo. Solo me falta ponerle barniz protector, pero por los momentos no tengo, pero apenas tenga poder ponerles, y así la pintura podrá soportar mejor el paso del tiempo. Espero que les haya gustado, ha sido un proceso sencillo pero cuidadoso, no hay nada mejor que la concentración al máximo y esta es una de las habilidades que mejor me ayuda a alcanzar ese nivel de concentración. Por ahora me despido y espeor volver muy pronto.
