Any place on Cyprus is brimming with historical landmarks, yet Paphos is the only city with an UNESCO heritage site. It would be covered in its own post, though. Let’s start with the city itself. It lies on the southwest coast of Cyprus about 100 km far from Larnaca. A ride from the airport takes about 90 minutes by car or 2 hours by bus, unless it stops in Limassol which makes the route about 30 minutes longer. Most of the locals live on a hill few hundred meters far from the coast while the seashore promenade is surrounded by hotels, apartments and fancy villas – for tourist and foreigners. The city centre and market are rather calm on lazy Monday afternoon…
Každé místo na Kypru přímo oplývá historií, ale Paphos je jediné město s památkou světového dědictví UNESCO. O té se rozepíšu ve vlastním postu, nejprve se podíváme do města. Leží na jihozápadním pobřeží asi 100 km od Larnaky. Autem z letiště pojedete asi 90 minut, autobusem 2 hodiny, pokud nebude stavět i v Limassolu. Pak musíte připočíst půl hodiny navíc. Většina místních žije na kopci asi dva kilometry od pobřeží, přímořská promenáda je obklopená hotely, apartmány a vilami. Pro turisty a cizince. Centrum a městské tržiště jsou v pondělí odpoledne vylidněné.
Just two minutes far, there’s a nice area that turned out to be mainly Turkish neighbourhood – we found a nice café there that did not accept cards. Hooray, a non-tourist place we thought (and started to look for an ATM). When we got back an hour later with cash and seated ourselves, my girlfriend noted that there had been no women – just men. Some sipping coffee, almost all of them smoking and no one drinking alcohol. No wonder all the surrounding streets had Turkish names and a mosque was just around the corner.
Jen dvě minutky od centra jsme narazili na celkem fajn náměstíčko, ze kterého se vyklubala turecká část města. Narazili jsme na kavárničku, která nebrala karty. Hurá, neturistický podnik, řekli jsme si (a šli hledat bankomat). Když jsme se za hodinku vrátili s hotovostí a usadili se, všimla si T., že tam nebyly žádné ženy. Někteří popíjeli kávu, skoro všichni kouřili a nikdo nepil alkohol. Není divu, že měly ulice kolem kavárny turecká jména a hned za rohem byla mešita.
And where’s a mosque, a church needs to be nearby. Or a shrine, like this marvellous one.
A když je někde mešita, kostel musí být hned vedle. Nebo aspoň modlitebna, jako tahle nádherná.
I don’t really know what took place in here or why is the location so special but I really enjoyed the place.
Netuším sice, co se tu stalo, nebo čím je tohle místo důležité, ale moc se mi tu líbilo.

Paphos Castle
The Paphos harbour is located a bit aside from the city and used to be protected by a massive Byzantine fortress from the 16th century. The fortress was rebuilt several time by the Ottomans and is rather well preserved.
Paphoský přístav je kousek za městem a chránila ho masivní byzantská pevnost, hrad Paphos ze 16. století. Hrad byl několikrát přestavěn Osmany a dnes je ve velmi dobrém stavu.
The Shipwreck
Besides of landmarks, there is an important “seamark” that have already become a new symbol of Paphos – the wreck of M/V Demetrios. The ship ran aground in 1998 during a sail to Syria.
Krom pamětihodností na pevnině je tu i jedna mořská. Z vraku obchodní lodi M/V Demetrios se už stihl stát symbol Paphosu. Loď najela na mělčinu v roce 1998 při plavbě do Sýrie.
Foodie tips
Minas Taverna is definitely a great place to eat when you are around the harbour.
V okolí přístavu rozhodně doporučuju tavernu Minas.
Προμηθέας Μουττάλου is definitely a locals’ place downtown (well, uptown in the terms of Paphos). The place does not have a menu, you just get what’s ready to be served, but it would be great anyways. Take a seat at the terrace, the view could be astonishing. Not for those allergic to cats, though.
Προμηθέας Μουττάλου je restaurace v centru hlavně pro místní. Není tu žádné menu, prostě dostanete, co je zrovna navařeno. Ale jídlo bude tak jako tak skvělé. Sedněte si s ním na terasu, výhled je opravdu dechberoucí. Ale ne pro lidi alergické na kočky.
