Dragons: Flying high and hitting hard!
It is time for another Battle Challenge and we got the Dragons again. What a joy, I like that splinter very much.
Chose wisely
A Dragon summoner is always combined with another element. That means you will always have a wider selection of monsters than someone fighting with an element summoner.
This gives you a unique chance to adapt to the rule set by combining with a different element depending on the circumstances.
But beware and remember: Your opponent has (in theory, as long as they have the cards) all the choices you have as well.
The Battle
Rules
We are fighting a 60 mana match in a modern silver league tournament. The available Splinters are Fire, Life, Death and of course Dragon. Summoner (de)buffs are disabled and we may only use monsters with magic attack. And there is blast damage! 💥
Strategy
With 60 mana I definitely think: Dragons! Since Agor Longtail was introduced with Riftwatchers they have a terrific taunt. Silenced Summoner means we won't have to worry about Kitty that much and can use Quix as a cheap (4 mana) stand in. Agor deals magic and melee damage. Since there are only magic monsters allowed, that fits perfectly (Agor also brings void armor) and Life splinter will provice repair and resurrection for that void armor taunt.
Let's build a team.
Lineup
As mentioned we want a cheap max level summoner and Quix is the way to go in this case. I don't have anyone cheaper.
We want to go for armor with repair and resurrection. Life splinter brings a lot of support for that.
We talked about Agor's void armor and taunt abilities already.
There is blast damage and no monster with reflection shield available to me with this rule set. So Agor has to take tank position and take the full damage from back line and tank to minimize the blast impact to second position only.
Kralus has to take the blast damage. It heals itself so we won't need/add any triage and reserve the spots for resurrection of Agor and some heavier damage dealers.
If it has to take tank position, like Agor it brings additional melee attack to the battle field.
With Darius we can resurrect Agor if needed and bring it back with its full armor intact. Jippieh for void armor.
Darius also brings a heavy three magic punch to the battle field so that should at least do some damage in case we encounter void or silence.
Adelade is an additional resurrection unit and it also brings us a repair action. So once per round we get an extra hit that Agor can take.
And while we're at it we add Oshuur Constantia to the team for yet another resurrection. If all three trigger for a win in the end, that should drive our opponent a little bit mad. 😉
There is only magic attack monsters allowed. So any damage coming from our opponent has to be magic with the chance for a little bit of melee like we use it.
Perfect chance for the Elven Mystic to shine. We silence the enemy.
To make it last as long as possible we put this card at the end, not many sneakers around and if there are they have to go for the taunt first.
Fight
The other team went for Dragon as well but combined it with Death element. The Djinn Muirat is a good choice, it also brings void armor to take a few more hits.
The void dragon might become a problem with its ability to absorb more magic damage.
Scattershot is a good choice to get around my taunt, might even take out one or two supporting units of mine. With the blast in play it will cause some damage for sure.
Poison is a nice way to get around the void armor and the sniper at the end will definitely cause some damage with the blast if my taunt is no more.
Result
Victoria! The battle is won. Agor had to be revived twice due to poison damage but thankfully that also removed the poison each time.
Other than that we did not lose a single unit. The Void Dragon was a nice choice to absorb the blast damage, I have to remember that one.
Conclusion
The strategy worked out pretty well. Surely the opposing team was no match and there would have been much better options.
Yet I think this was a solid lineup that is hard to beat.
Once again the Dragons proved to be a very powerful Splinter. After all, my opponent opted for them as well.
Thank you for reading, maybe we'll see each other on the battlefield.
