SYNOPSIS
After a year of forced labor in the salt mines, the young assassin Celaena Sardothien has been summoned by the prince of the Kingdom of Adarlan. Celaena has not come with the intention of ending the prince's life, but with the desire to win his freedom. If she defeats twenty-three assassins, thieves and warriors in a life and death competition, she will be released from prison to serve as royal champion.
The prince will advise her. The captain of the guard will protect her. But something evil lurks in the crystal palace, and it is there to kill. As her competitors die one by one, Celaena's struggle to win her freedom becomes a fight for survival and a relentless search for the source of evil before it destroys the world.
Sarah J Maas became my favorite author ever since I read A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) and of course I wanted to read more by her, though for no particular reason I hadn't yet.
I had heard from other readers that her first literary saga, Throne of Glass, was superior, so I was looking forward to reading it.
And now that I've read the first book I can tell you it had a good start and a good protagonist.
Celaena struck me as a strong girl, and experienced for the young age she is. She's funny, sarcastic and has the same love for books as I do, so I immediately liked her. But beyond that, her personality is great even though she sometimes got carried away with the ego and arrogance she felt from being known as the best assassin in Adarlan, but I chalk that up to her immaturity. In the end she's only 18 or 19.
About the writing, I liked the narration, it is quite descriptive but without getting boring and during the whole book the author keeps us in vigil, alert for any event because there is a mystery to discover. Someone or something really dark and most likely supernatural is murdering the champions and we must find out.
We really don't know who to trust because even the king could be guilty.
I also liked that the author kept dropping clues that allowed us to tie up loose ends or piece together theories. For example, I knew first of all who was behind the murders. That made me feel cool and smart, just between us 😂.
About the secondary characters, most of them were fine, although I was VERY HAPPY with Princess Nehemia. I thought she was brilliant, intelligent, noble, sassy and with an unwavering loyalty to her people.
There was a sort of love triangle between the captain of the guard, Chaol, Celaena and Prince Dorian, but honestly I didn't like either of them enough. They didn't strike me as standout characters. Anyway, the romance wasn't the focus of this story but rather takes a backseat.
Overall, this first book is shown as the beginning of the story, which I found very apt and intriguing. There are many secrets to discover, both of the kingdom and of Celaena herself.
To tell the truth, I liked the book quite a lot, I already want to read the rest. I still have 7 books to read so I will read them little by little. Maybe interspersed with other stories.

Sarah J Maas se convirtió en mi autora favorita desde que leí Una Corte de Rosas y Espinas (ACOTAR) y por supuesto que quería leer más de ella, aunque sin alguna razón en especial no lo había hecho aún.
Había escuchado de otras lectoras que su primera saga literaria, Trono de Cristal, era superior, así que tenía muchas ganas de leerla.
Y ahora que ya leí el primer libro te puedo decir que tuvo un buen comienzo y una buena protagonista.
Celaena me pareció una chica fuerte, y experimentada para la corta edad que tiene. Es divertida, sarcástica y siente el mismo amor por los libros que yo, así que inmediatamente me cayó bien. Pero más alla de eso, su personalidad es genial aunque a veces se dejaba llevar por el ego y la arrogancia que sentía por ser conocida como la mejor asesina de Adarlan, pero se lo atribuyo a a su inmadurez. Al final solo tiene 18 o 19 años.
Sobre la escritura, me gustó la narración, es bastante descriptiva pero sin llegar a aburrir y durante todo el libro la autora nos tiene en vigilia, alertas ante cualquier acontecimiento porque hay un misterio que descubrir. Alguien o algo realmente oscuro y muy probable sobrenatural está asesinando a los campeones y debemos descubrirlo.
Realmente no sabemos en quién confiar porque hasta el rey podría ser culpable.
También me gustó que la autora nos iba soltando pistas que nos permitía atar cabos o armar teorías. Por ejemplo, supe primero que todos quien estaba detrás de los asesinatos. Eso me hizo sentir genial e inteligente, aquí entre nos 😂
Sobre los personajes secundarios, la mayoría estuvo bien, aunque me quedé MUY CONTENTA con la princesa Nehemia. Me pareció brillante, inteligente, noble, atrevida y con una lealtada inquebrantable hacia su pueblo.
Había una especie de triángulo amoroso entre el capitán de la guardia, Chaol, Celaena y el principe Dorian, pero honestamente ninguno de los dos me gustó lo suficiente. No me parecieron personajes destacables. De todas formas el romance no fue el centro de esta historia sino que queda en un segundo plano.
En general, este primer libro se muestra como el inicio de la historia, que me pareció muy idóneo e intrigante. Hay muchos secretos que descubrir, tanto del reino como de la misma Celaena.
La verdad, me gustó bastante el libro, ya quiero leer el resto. Aún me faltan 7 libros por leer así que los iré leyendo poco a poco. Quizá intercalados con otras historias.
