A few years ago, more than I would like to acknowledge, together with my lifelong friend Horacio, we decided that on my next visit we would make a new trip to the Río Pico area, a beautiful and sparsely inhabited place but with great landscapes, water mirrors and of course good fishing.
As always, my friend was in charge of organizing it, since being a resident of Patagonia it is much easier, perhaps because of the fact that porteños are not welcome anywhere.
The truth is that he hired some beautiful cabins with a large wooded park and an excellent view of Lake 3 and although we were several hundred meters from its shores, the elevation of the land allowed us to see it in all its splendor.
All the cabins are the same, the alpine type with a gabled corrugated sheet metal roof, they all have a similar internal layout: kitchen, bathroom, dining room and living room on the ground floor and the two bedrooms upstairs.
As always happens when one visits uninhabited places, the administrators of the property approach in search of conversation and incidentally sell the client the benefits of the area, as if it were necessary. There we found out that the previous month the tennis player David Nalbaldian had been in the exact same cabin as us, he told us that he was a fishing enthusiast and that he visited them every year, but that particular year something curious happened.
David had arrived three days ago and of course each one of them dedicated himself to his favorite hobby, always accompanied by a renowned guide from the area, on the third night he received an urgent call from Europe, it was from the Association of Professional Tennis Players to warn him that he had to travel urgently to Shanghai to replace Andy Roddick, who was injured, at the Masters.
King David, as the blond tennis player from Córdoba was called, won that tournament, defeating none other than Roger Federer in the final.
In addition, and for the only time among the eight participants there were four Argentine participants, one who won his place due to his annual results and another three who entered as replacements, Nalbaldian was one, Guillermo Coria who replaced a young and injured Rafael Nadal and finally Mariano Puerta who replaced Andre Agassi.
The manager of the cabins assured anyone who wanted to hear it that the place had worked wonders to relax the great tennis player and give him the strength and tranquility necessary to succeed in such an important event. He does the same with all visitors and that is why his undertaking is so successful.
I do not know if it will be true but we always go there, we are successful in fishing and we also come back relaxed and wanting to return as soon as possible. Nor do I know if the place influenced Nalbaldian, although if they have made him want to return and stay in those beautiful cabins, I know that he has done it repeatedly.
Unos cuantos años atrás, más de los que me gustaría reconocer, junto a mi amigo de toda la vida Horacio, decidimos que en mi siguiente visita haríamos un nuevo viaje hacia la zona de Río Pico, un lugar hermoso y poco habitado pero con grandes paisajes, espejos de agua y por supuesto buena pesca.
Para la organización del mismo se encargó como siempre mi amigo ya que siendo residente de la Patagonia es bastante más sencillo, quizás por eso de que los porteños no son bienvenidos en ninguna parte.
Lo cierto es que contrató unas lindas cabañas con un gran parque arbolado y una excelente vista al lago 3 y aunque estábamos a varios cientos de metros de sus costas, la elevación del terreno nos permitía verlo en todo su esplendor.
Todas las cabañas son iguales, del tipo alpino con techo de chapa acanalada a dos aguas, todas tienes una distribución interna similar: cocina, baño, comedor y sala de estar en la planta baja y los dos dormitorios en el piso de arriba.
Como ocurre siempre que uno visita lugares poco habitados, los administradores del predio se acercan en búsqueda de conversación y de paso venderle al cliente las bondades de la zona, como si hiciera falta. Allí nos enteramos que el mes anterior había estado en la misma exacta cabaña que nosotros el tenista David Nalbaldian, nos dijo que era un entusiasta de la pesca y que todos los años los visitaba pero ese año en particular pasó algo curioso.
David hacía tres días que había llegado y por supuesto se dedicó a su pasatiempo favorito cada uno de ellos, siempre acompañado por un reconocido guía de la zona, a la tercera noche recibió un llamado urgente de Europa, era de la Asociación de Tenistas Profesionales para avisarle que debía viajar urgente a Shangai para reemplazar en el Masters a Andy Roddick, quien estaba lesionado.
El Rey David como le llamaban al rubio tenista cordobés ganó ese torneo derrotando en la final nada menos que a Roger Federer.
Además y por única vez entre los ocho participantes hubo cuatro participantes argentinos, uno que ganó su lugar por sus resultados anuales y otros tres que ingresaron como reemplazos, Nalbaldian fue uno, Guillermo Coria quien reemplazó a un joven y lesionado Rafael Nadal y por último Mariano Puerta quien reemplazó a Andre Agassi.
El administrador de las cabañas aseguraba a quien quisiera oírlo que el lugar había obrado maravillas para relajar al gran tenista y dotarlo de las fuerzas y tranquilidad necesarias para triunfar en tan importante evento. Lo mismo hace con todos los visitantes y por ello es que tiene tanto éxito su emprendimiento.
No sé si será verdad pero nosotros siempre que vamos tenemos éxito en la pesca y además volvemos relajados y con ganas de regresar lo más pronto posible. Tampoco sé si el lugar influyó en Nalbaldian, aunque si le han dado ganas de volver y a alojarse en esas lindas cabañas, se que lo ha hecho en reiteradas oportunidades.
