Hello everyone
How are you today? I hope that we are all always given health and also ease in facing all kinds of challenges and obstacles in this world. We know, all problems can be faced if done with a cool head, logic and not with anger. Anyway, happy new year to all members of Family & Friends and how are you celebrating the new year this time?
New Year is a celebration that is unique and universal. Every culture and religion has its own way of celebrating the New Year. Since I was a child, I always have interesting stories and unforgettable experiences during New Year's and New Year's Eve. When I was little, my father and I were always invited by my father to go around the city to see the bustling and lively people on the street. The three of us got on motorbikes and went around the city which was jammed because of the crowds of people walking around. After I became a teenager, we stopped doing that and celebrated New Years with friends our own age.
On this New Year's Eve, it's a little special because after several years we haven't had New Year's together at home. We decided to have a barbeque at our house with all our family members and friends. Coincidentally, my cousin had just finished his undergraduate education, and I asked him to invite his friends who I also happened to know to celebrate graduation and enjoy the New Year's Eve moment.
We bought lots of fish and chicken for this New Year's Eve event. When I went to the market, there were also many people buying fish and chicken. The high demand on New Year's Eve made the prices of these two food products go up.
We started gathering as the sun began to set. Me, my cousin and his friend prepared some tools for this process of grilling fish and chicken. The grill equipment we use is very simple. We arrange bricks for two levels, as a medium for burning and use charcoal to carry out the process of grilling fish and chicken. In order for the hot coals to concentrate more, we put used zinc to make the charcoal not scatter.
When it comes to barbecue and grilling, I've often noticed that there are two types of people. First, people who can make and light coals, and secondly, those who can't do it. Because of that, I often say that people who can make a bonfire are special, because not everyone can start a fire. My cousin and my friend are very skilled at starting fires and creating embers, while I am not.
Our conventional grill is not very big, so the process of grilling fish and chicken will take a long time. Susana became very lively and warm, we threw jokes at each other while grilling fish. The smell of grilled fish also invites many wild cats that live around our house to come, and one stray cat managed to make us excited because it successfully stole a grilled fish.
It is these moments of friendship and kinship that are sought after in an event like this. Some people who are cynical and anti-social may argue, why make a barbecue because it's a hassle to have to prepare a grill and grill fish. Our clothes and bodies will smell of smoke all night doing that. We can just buy ready-to-eat food and eat it with our family that night. Why bother grilling chicken and fish, especially when the dishes we bake don't necessarily taste good.
The answer is simple, for people in Indonesia and maybe many people in this world will agree, that the preparation for a celebration is more interesting than the celebration itself. Some people even really like to participate in barbecues and help with all the processes there but don't eat the cooked dishes, they come because they just want to feel the joy.
After nearly two hours, the fish and chicken we had grilled were cooked and we began to arrange them on plates. I told my cousin and his friend, my mom and the rest of the family to eat first and I guarded the grill from an invasion of feral cats. It's impossible for us to eat together, because some people can't help but be hungry, especially my father and younger brother. Besides that, my wife also has to eat on time.
The process of grilling fish and chicken was almost finished at 11pm, and it didn't take long for the sounds of fireworks to signal that the new year in my city had begun. We didn't light a fire, because the money had run out to buy groceries for this New Year's Eve event, we just enjoyed the fireworks lit by other people. That's all for our New Year's Eve story this time, see you next time.
