- There are times when you get to places when you least expect it. The original plan was to get my passport fixed and head home right away. Bad weather and not part of the plan we headed out to a farm resort to drop off my mother in law. Most of the time trips that are unplanned often leads to discovery and a fantastic time. Poetry Sunday: 'I Like War' and 'Piano'
Irony is one of my favorite literary devices. So much can be said through it that can't be said in other ways. Both of the following poems rely on irony to some degree. The first, "I Like War," can be referred to as extended irony. Much like its distant cousin, the extended metaphor, extended irony isn't just a single use of irony in a poem. Rather, it takes the simple concept and plays on it throughout the poem using a variety of conceits to drive the message, to make the point in differing ways.

She wakes up in the late afternoon, stretches and looks out the window. It is a dark, cold foggy day. Everything is damp. The bark on the trees look soft yet prickly. A good time to pick for medicines.

I came to SC several years ago to take care of my elderly parents and had not been back to Tennessee where my husband and I lived for several years (although I hope to move back there some day). As such, I had not seen my sister-in-law
or my dear friend
in a very long time — although all of us talk on the phone several times each week! It had also been a long time since I'd seen other dear friends (Kathy & Larry) who are like "adopted family" to me, although we've stayed in-touch over the years, too.
Tommy the little fat boy - Original fiction - children story with a lesson
Once upon a time there was a little boy named Tommy. I am not sure we can call him "little" as Tommy was not the smallest of children. Tommy was fat. The kids in school made fun of him, and he did not have many friends. During breaks he sat alone at a table gobbling down his food. None of the children really wanted to play with him. They judged him on the outside, and no one really knew what was going on inside.
