If you have seen or read my last couple posts, you would know exactly what I’m talking about. So go back and read them the get back to me......
Kidding... kidding
My son Wyatt () has been in the hospital since 2:30 A.M. on Saturday the 20th. He was experiencing a little fever and what seemed to be trapped gas or some sort of stomach bug. So he had some stomach discomfort and puked once and had a loss of appetite. He stayed home from school on Friday and was pretty down and out on Thursday. The way he was explaining the discomfort resembled a stomach bug, something viral, or a couple trapped farts. So we kept him comfortable and kept the fluids going.
Mama-Splatts is amazing!!! She has these kids eating so healthy it is crazy.
Sweets... they are kept to a minimum
Processed boxed stuff... pretty much don’t exist at our house.
Sometimes I call her the water Nazi
“Have some water”
“Did you drink any water today? How much?”
She puts in so much work and effort making sure these kids are getting a good balanced diet and proper hydration.
Even though my kids attend Public Schools, they are never, I repeat, never sick. Well ok, maybe once or twice a year they get the sniffles and it’s gone in a couple days. When this sort of “bug” does make an attempt to “bug” my kids, we don’t turn straight to medications to to fight it. We have an amazing thing called immune system and we believe needs to be allowed to do its job. Just like your muscles, if you don’t use them you lose them and they become weak and worthless. So we give the kids immune systems the opportunity to do what they do best....fight infection and disease.
Ok, so around 12:30 A.M. on Saturday wakes Mama-Splatts up and is complaining about his stomach hurting. So she got up and laid with him and rubbed his stomach and he fell asleep. I didn’t wake up for this, Daddy was tired.
Then @2:00 A.M. he came in again and said it was really hurting. I happened to wake up this time, he wasn’t crying but I could tell it was bugging him pretty bad. So Mama-Splatts and I determined it was time to go to the Emergency room. Amazingly there was nobody in the waiting room at the hospital, since it was early on a Saturday. You know Friday nights tend to get little rowdy with all the party people out there. We ended up gettig into a ER patient room within a half hour or so. Not bad.
Now we wait...
And...
Wait
And...
Wait
After the Doctor finally came in and took a look at him.
He said, “I can tell just by his look that he is not feeling well at all.”
He ordered some blood tests and a CT scan to see what is going on inside my little dude’s stomach.
Then it was a couple hours before they took us back to get a CT scan done on his abdomen and then the blood tests came back. They noticed that his white blood cell count was really high. Meaning his immune system had been set into overdrive. This means War!! The last time he was here he had bad constipation, which was over 3 years ago. Not drinking enough water was the cause of this. Hence Mama-Splatts being a Water Nazi. :wink :wink
They compared the white blood cell count from then and now and it had tripled. I’m not sure what it is called but he looked at the level of something in the blood test and said it is how they determine how much of the white blood cells are fighting the infection/virus. The Doctor’s response when he looked at this level on
Around 7 A.M. the surgeon showed up took a look at the CT scan and determined his appendix had a stone in it causing a blockage. Early onset of appendicitis can be treated with antibiotics with around an 80% success rate but with his white blood cell count the way it is and the stone inside causing a blockage that was out of the question.
After explaining to My little Soldier about the procedure and what is happening in his body and what needs to be removed. Wyatt simply said, “OK”
Really no other questions?
Not even the slightest bit of a worry on his face?
He has never had any sort of procedure before and he is acting calm as can be. Completely relaxed and not nervous one little bit.
Got his Doo Rag on and waiting to get wheeled back into the operating room to get his appendix removed.
The surgery took a little longer than expected to, having to do a little cleanup inside his abdomen. His appendix didn’t burst but it was perforated and leaking bacteria into his abdomen. The surgeon said there were some puss pockets that needed cleaning up but other than that all went well.
By the time he got up to his room it was almost 11 A.M. and Mama-Splatts and I haven’t had a bit of sleep but we were glad to see our tough little guy again. His little Sister @kuku-Splatts couldn’t wait any longer to see her big brother. She had her cousins and aunt join her on a bus ride to the hospital. It was the first time she rode the bus and when she arrived was still sleeping. She was so concerned about him but with a little reassurance she felt much better.
Recovery Time
Poor guys hasn’t really eaten much solid foods since Thursday at lunch. Here it is Saturday and all he can have is ice chips or crushed ice. When he saw a commercial on TV showing a big juicy bacon burger,
he responded sadly, “I want one of those.”
That’s my boy, feeling better already. Lol. Being 10 years old and sitting in a hospital can get super boring. That is where Grandpa comes in to save the day.
LEGO Time
This is only about 4 hours after surgery and he is feeling a ton better. Plus these LEGO builds are pretty awesome.
They are from the animated series LEGO Ninjago
Mama-Splatts stayed the first night and despite all kinds of alarms going off periodically through the night he didn’t complain about any pain or discomfort. After the surgeon stopped in and placed him on a clear liquid diet, I swooped in with the Nintendo Switch. This should help pass the time while we sit here in the hospital room. We have been getting in some serious Mario Kart action in I can tell you thay much.
As for the food, I was pleasantly surprised with the dinner. Not sure what exactly everything was but it sure did taste pretty good.
So I called into work and said I wasn’t going to be in on Monday and stayed the night here at the hospital with my little homie. It was a pretty peaceful night, only a couple alarms sounded from his IV getting low. He did take a little bit of Tylenol around 3 A.M. when he was feeling a little discomfort. One dose of Tylenol since surgery!! Really!?!? The nurses just respond, “OOOKAAAYYYY” with a bit of a puzzled look on their face.
I just shrug my shoulders give them a grin.
keeps asking when he can go home. Hopefully the Doctor will be in sometime today and give us the good news that we can go home. We will just wait and see. Until then we are keeping our spirits high and putting in some miles on the Mario Kart track and on the 4th floor of the hospital.
Shift change
Now it’s Mama-Splatts’ turn to burn up the Mario Kart track and see if she can beat the champ.
