Jeans Recycling Continues || Recycling 102: Old jeans to Denim Hat

We were having this contest in #needleworkmonday community where we were invited to make something out from the old jeans. But I just wanted to share it also here another recycling project that I was able to finish aside from making my entry in the said contest. I used the excess fabric of the same old jeans that I had extracted to make my summer top. I had decided to make a summer hat to be paired with the top I made.

So here are the materials used:

• old jeans
• scissor
• yarn (I used spun polyester)
• 2.75mm crochet hook

Procedure:

First, I draw a circle here on the fabric measuring 7 inches and cut it out. This would be our top part of the hat.

Second, I also cut 4 pieces of rectangular shapes and another 4 trapezoid shapes like the headband area. Then I started to connect all these 8 pieces alternating their sizes. This serves as our headband part of the hat. Next, I connected the top part and headband part by sewing its edges. I was planning to use a crochet on the brim part of the hat, so I started making chains and single crochet on the 1st row before I sewed it to the edge part of the headband.

Then I continue the 2nd row by using single crochet up to the 6th row without increasing. This part is still the headband part since the width of my headband was cut too short, so I decided to extend its size by crocheting a few rows.

On the 7th row, I used double crochet on every stitch and began increasing every after 7 double crochet. Then 8th and 9th rows didn't have any increase and increase again on the 10th row every after 25 double crochet. 11th and 12th didn't have any increase and on the 13th row, I just used single crochet as it's edging.

After the brim, I put a heart shape on the headband part of the hat by crocheting chains and hand-sewn it first directly on the denim fabric before I have sewn it on the sewing machine.

And this is the final look of my summer hat using recycled jeans with crochet embellishment. 🥰

I was hoping I can use this soon on our summer trip together with the summer top I made.

So I'm urging everyone to go through their closets and find a pair of jeans that they don't wear anymore. Alternatively, before tossing out those old garments, consider what you can make with them. Maybe you can still use that old cloth to make a top, a hat, or a rug. Let's recycle those old garments, get rid of the ones we think are trash, and reuse them again.
