Designing a Lapbook: “The Rabbit Looks for a Home”
Greetings to all the members of this wonderful, creative, and colorful community.
This time, I’d like to show you a Lapbook-style pictogram I created for my daughter Amanda’s final project. The project is called “Having Fun with My Family Through Stories”; the idea was for the children to memorize a story and retell it using the pictogram as a visual aid.
Amanda decided to retell a story she really likes and has known for a long time; it’s called “The Rabbit Looks for a Home,” so I’ll show you how it all turned out.
I should mention that I bought some materials and figured things out as I went along, since I had never designed a project like this before.
Materials
1 cardboard box.
1 sheet of frosted cardstock.
2 sheets of school-grade cardstock.
1 sheet of bond paper.
Silicone glue.
Foam.
Marker.
Ruler.
Scissors.
Procedure:
Step 1.
I cut 3 pieces of cardboard; this is a bit thick to make it more durable.
The measurements are: one large piece measuring 44 cm by 33 cm. The small pieces measure 44 cm by 11.5 cm.
Step 2.
I covered one side of the cardboard with white bond paper, which would be the back.
Step 3.
I cut the green cardstock and placed it, leaving a 1 cm margin from the edge.
For the small pieces of cardboard, I placed cardstock on both sides.
Step 4.
Next, I used the remaining bond paper to make the cover; there I wrote, “I have fun with my family through stories.” I drew the letters in pencil, then traced them with a marker, and finally cut them out.
Step 5.
To make the cover stand out, I attached the sheet with the project name to a piece of foam board and, using silicone glue, placed it on one of the small pieces of cardboard.
I did the same with the other part of the cover featuring the story’s title; I added frosted cardstock and foam board to the cover illustration to make it stand out.
Step 6.
I wrote the key phrases from the story on white sheets of paper to place them above the drawings; I must confess that I wanted to draw the images by hand, but time was against me, so I selected and printed the illustration, cut it out, and placed it on a base of frosted cardstock.
Step 7.
Paying close attention, I calculated the space to arrange the content and began gluing the images and text.
Step 8.
The last step was to join the three pieces together. I did this by cutting six small strips of white glitter foam; I didn’t measure them because I used the project itself as a reference. I attached these strips using silicone and placed them at the top, center, and bottom to provide extra support.
Step 9
In addition to this, I made a small pointer: I used silicone to attach a small picture of the rabbit to some frosted foam board and attached a wooden stick to it. With this, Amanda will be able to point to each image to better guide herself and the children as the story unfolds.
When I finished this lapbook, I felt really proud of my work, because it’s the first time I’ve made one like this, so Amanda and I are happy with the result. Without a doubt, it’s an ideal story to present this way because you can interact with the illustrations as the rabbit moves through the book.
The advantage of doing it at home is that, by watching the whole process, it became much easier for Amanda to use the right gestures when telling the story.

Diseñando un Lapbook: "La coneja busca casa"
Saludos a todos los miembros de esta maravillosa, creativa y colorida comunidad.
En esta oportunidad, quiero mostrarles un pictograma tipo Lapbook que elaboré para el cierre de proyecto de mi hija Amanda. Este proyecto se llama "Me divierto con mi familia a través de los cuentos", la idea era que los niños memoricen un cuento y lo narren teniendo como apoyo dicho pictograma.
Amanda decidió narrar un cuento que le gusta mucho y que además se sabe desde hace tiempo; se llama "La coneja busca casa", así que les muestro qué tal nos quedó todo.
Debo resaltar que compré algunos materiales y fui resolviendo sobre la marcha, ya que nunca había diseñado un trabajo como este.
Materiales
1 caja de cartón.
1 cartulina escarchada.
2 cartulinas escolares.
1 lámina de papel Bond.
Silicón.
Foami.
Marcador.
Regla.
Tijeras.
Procedimiento:
Paso 1.
Corté 3 láminas de cartón; este es un poco grueso para hacerlo más resistente.
Las medidas son: una grande de 44 cm por 33 cm. Las pequeñas de 44 cm por 11.5 cm.
Paso 2.
Forré una de las caras del cartón con papel Bond blanco, que sería la parte trasera.
Paso 3.
Corté la cartulina verde y la coloqué dejando un margen de 1 cm en relación al borde.
En el caso de los cartones pequeños, coloqué cartulina en ambos lados.
Paso 4.
Lo siguiente fue usar el papel bond restante para hacer la portada; allí le coloqué "Me divierto con mi familia a través de los cuentos". Hice las letras con grafito, luego con marcador y luego recorté.
Paso 5.
Para resaltar la portada, adherí la hoja con el nombre del proyecto a una lámina de foami y, usando silicón, la coloqué sobre uno de los cartones pequeños.
Lo mismo hice con la otra parte de la portada con el nombre del cuento; al dibujo de presentación le coloqué cartulina escarchada y foami para que resalte.
Paso 6.
Escribí las frases claves del cuento en hojas blancas para colocarlas en la parte superior de los dibujos; debo confesar que deseaba hacer las imágenes a mano, pero el tiempo no me favorecía, así que seleccioné e imprimí la ilustración, recorté y le coloqué como base cartulina escarchada.
Paso 7.
Prestando mucha atención, calculé el espacio para distribuir el contenido y comencé a pegar las imágenes y el texto.
Paso 8.
Lo último fue unir las tres piezas. Lo hice cortando seis tirantes pequeños de foami blanco escarchado; no le tomé medidas porque lo hice tomando como referencia el mismo trabajo. Estos tirantes los fijé usando silicón y los ubiqué en la parte superior, centro e inferior para darle mayor soporte.
Paso 9
Adicional a esto, e realicé un pequeño puntero: con silicón fijé un pequeño dibujo de la coneja sobre foami escarchado y le coloqué una paleta de madera. Con esto Amanda podrá señalar cada imagen para orientarse mejor y orientar a los niños según el desarrollo del cuento.
Cuando terminé este lapbook, me sentí realmente orgullosa de mi trabajo, porque es la primera vez que hago uno de este tipo, así que Amanda y yo estamos satisfechas con el resultado.
Sin duda, es un cuento ideal para hacerlo de esa forma porque se juega con las ilustraciones según el recorrido de la coneja.
La ventaja de hacerlo en casa es que Amanda, al ver todo el proceso, se le hizo mucho más fácil apoyarse adecuadamente a la hora de contarlo.
