Llegar al Parque Central de La Habana es, para cualquiera que lo visita por primera vez, una especie de bautizo o iniciación, es saber que estás parado o caminando por unos de los puntos de referencia más conocidos de la capital cubana. Este no es un parque cualquiera, es el corazón social de la ciudad, un escenario donde la vida habanera se transcurre en todo su esplendor y naturaleza, con sus alegrías y sus tristezas. Fue construido como plaza pública para el recreo y esparcimiento de los habaneros. En su centro está la primera estatua de José Martí que se erigió en Cuba.

Arriving at Havana's Central Park is, for anyone visiting it for the first time, a kind of baptism or initiation; it's knowing that you are standing or walking through one of the most well-known landmarks of the Cuban capital. This is not just any park; it is the social heart of the city, a stage where Havana life unfolds in all its splendor and nature, with its joys and its sorrows. It was built as a public square for the recreation and leisure of Habaneros. At its center stands the first statue of José Martí erected in Cuba.

En el Parque Central se realizan actos políticos, culturales y veladas históricas. Este es el sitio donde termina la tradicional Marcha de las antorchas que se hace en recordación al natalicio de José Martí cada 28 de enero.

In Central Park, political and cultural events and historical soirees are held. This is the site where the traditional March of the Torches, held in remembrance of the birth of José Martí every January 28th, ends.

Mi transito por ese sitio tuvo lugar el martes a media mañana, mientras me dirigia a otro sitio y se hacía camino. Ayer habían muy pocas personas, en general, hay pocas personas en las calles debido al déficit de combustible. El sol, ya fuerte, se filtraba a través de los árboles, creando un lindo espectáculo de luces y sombras sobre los frios bancos de mármol.

My transit through this place took place on Tuesday in the mid-morning, while I was heading to another place and it was on the way. Yesterday there were very few people; in general, there are few people on the streets due to the fuel shortage. The sun, already strong, filtered through the trees, creating a beautiful spectacle of light and shadow on the cold marble benches.

Lo primero que notas al llegar allí es el sonido de los cláxones de los lujosos autos antiguos que tienen su punto de partida a un costado del parque. Para disfrutar del hermoso entorno, me senté en un banco, justo frente a la estatua de José Martí, decidí simplemente observar, descansar y comerme una barra de chocolate para renovar fuerzas y seguir camino.

The first thing you notice upon arriving there is the sound of the horns of the luxurious classic cars that have their starting point on one side of the park. To enjoy the beautiful surroundings, I sat on a bench, right in front of the statue of José Martí, and decided to simply observe, rest, and eat a chocolate bar to regain strength and continue on my way.

Este parque, que se encuentra ubicado en el centro histórico de la capital cubana, en la Habana Vieja, rodeado por las calles Prado, Zulueta, Neptuno y San José, es una especie de termómetro de la ciudad por donde pasan miles de personas a diario, nativos y foráneos. Este es un sitio muy visitado por ancianos que vienen a hacer remembranzas, a soñar con amores pasados y tiempo mejores. Sus caras arrugadas hablan de décadas de vida en esta isla.

This park, which is located in the historic center of the Cuban capital, in Old Havana, surrounded by Prado, Zulueta, Neptuno, and San José streets, is a kind of thermometer of the city through which thousands of people pass daily, locals and foreigners. This is a site much visited by elderly people who come to reminisce, to dream of past loves and better times. Their wrinkled faces speak of decades of life on this island.

Son muchos los edificios emblemáticos que lo rodean, entre ellos: el Gran Teatro de La Habana; el Hotel Inglaterra, que posee un café donde se reunen intelectuales a debatir sobre historia y temas de actualidad. También está el hotel Telégrafo.

There are many emblematic buildings that surround it, including: the Gran Teatro de La Habana; the Hotel Inglaterra, which has a café where intellectuals gather to debate history and current affairs. There is also the Hotel Telégrafo.

Si cruzas la calle Zulueta te encontrarás con la Manzana de Gómez, a su lado, una plaza en la que se exponen cada cierto tiempo, obras escultóricas itinerantes de gran formato. También tenemos al hotel Parque Central y el despampanante hotel Plaza. En otra de sus esquinas está el Cine Payret, primer cine que visité rn la capital y que lleva años cerrado y en reparación. Desde algunos puntos del parque puede verse el Capitolio.

If you cross Zulueta Street, you will come across Manzana de Gómez; next to it, a square where large-format itinerant sculptural works are exhibited from time to time. We also have the Parque Central Hotel and the stunning Hotel Plaza. On another of its corners is the Cine Payret, the first cinema I visited in the capital, which has been closed and under repair for years. From some points in the park, you can see the Capitolio.

Este parque también es el escenario de la "esquina caliente" donde los aficionados al béisbol (hombres y algunas mujeres), ríen, gritan y discuten sobre las estadísticas, los pronósticos, las posibilidades de sus equipos de jugar la final o ganar el campeonato y sobre los hábitos y jugadas de sus jugadores favoritos.

This park is also the setting for the "heated corner" ("esquina caliente") where baseball fans (men and some women) laugh, shout, and argue about statistics, predictions, their teams' chances of making it to the finals or winning the championship, and about the habits and plays of their favorite players.

Este sitio es el punto de encuentro oficial de Guías turísticos que buscaban a sus grupos, mientras que los "jineteros", con su verbo carismático y persistente, ofrecen puros (tabscos), restaurantes particulares o un taxi en un Chevrolet de los años 50. Allí conven, en un equilibrio perfecto, la mirada curiosa del turista con la astuta supervivencia del habanero en su "lucha" diaria.

This site is the official meeting point for tour guides looking for their groups, while the "jineteros" (hustlers), with their charismatic and persistent chatter, offer cigars, private restaurants, or a taxi in a 1950s Chevrolet. There, the curious gaze of the tourist meets the astute survival of the Habanero in his daily "struggle" in perfect balance.
