What is fashion? Fashion is a way of life. It's more than just what you wear at the moment. Fashion is an attitude, it's how you carry yourself and your personal style. It's not necessarily what you wear on any given day, it's who you are and how you choose to express yourself. We all have our own style, and the important thing is that it's yours and it makes you feel confident and beautiful inside.
When I was a kid, I paid zero attention to what I wear and I rather leave that aspect of my life to my mom while I worry about what cartoon to watch or which video game to play. But as I got older, I started paying a lot of attention to my fashion and I started experimenting with different styles until I found the one I'm more comfortable with.
One of the earliest styles I remember adopting was long sleeve shirts and plain trousers. That was back when I was a church worker, we were mandated to always dress corporately, hence the plain trousers and long sleeve shirts. Whenever I come across some of the old pictures from back then, I always cringe a little because they looked very embarrassing, my fashion sense was zero! The clothes didn't fit me at all but back then I thought there were the best.
I got over the phase of long sleeve shirts and plain trousers after a while and I moved on to jeans trousers and football jerseys. In fact, the majority of my shirts as of then were jerseys of different football clubs (PSG, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Tottenham, etc). This type of dressing was a very popular trend in my country some years ago and I loved it, but it's no longer popular today.
What about now?
As of now, I mostly wear crew-neck T-shirts (round-neck) or hoodies, a pair of jeans or joggers, and sometimes a jacket. I love wearing jackets a lot and some of the ones I have are really thick. My friends keep wondering if I'm even human coz I wear thick jackets even on a very hot day and I will still feel comfortable (mostly because I don't get hot easily).
I haven't talked about footwear yet but with the style of dressing I have just talked about, it won't be hard to guess that my preferred footwear is sneakers. I usually wear sneakers when going for an important occasion but if I'm going to a place not very important, I usually put on slides (or what we call pam slippers in Nigeria). That's what I wear most of the time because I hardly go out to important places, maybe once a week and that's Church.
The sneakers I wear are usually from famous designers (Nike, Gucci, Balenciaga) but they have gotten even more expensive than before these days, so I have started looking into less famous brands or even unbranded ones which are cheaper but still look good. As for clothes, I don't pay attention to the brand, as long as they look good and are of good quality, then I buy them.
Clothes I will never wear
Lace and Ankara materials. I have no love for these types of clothes right from childhood and I don't want to really state the reason. I have no problem with people who wear them coz I believe everybody should wear what they like and feel comfortable in, but sadly I don't feel comfortable in these clothes, especially lace.
My mom who was my fashion manager when I was a child got me lace material clothes and I had no choice but to wear them. That was probably one of the worst decision I ever made in this life, the clothes felt like hell because it was very itchy. I wore one of them to church and when I got back after the church service, my whole body was red coz of the itching. That was the last day I ever wore lace clothes.
Clothes I would love to wear
Suits! The last time I wore a suit was during my uncle's wedding, I was around 6 years old back then and I couldn't have remembered it if I didn't see a picture of me in my family's photo album. I always admire people who wear suits, especially people that look good in them (sadly not everyone looks good in a suit).
What then is stopping me from buying one? Coz they are very expensive! The money to buy a single suit will be enough for me to buy up to 5 of the casual clothes I wear. Also, the only place I can think of wearing a suit to right now is church, and I think that's overkill. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't have many reasons for wanting to buy a suit right now, but I will have a good reason to when I get to my final year in the university and am about to do my project defense.
