Since the Museum of Culture reopened its doors a few years ago, the city of Valencia (Venezuela) has been one of the key places for plastic arts.
I had the opportunity to see the works of three great Venezuelan exponents: Jesús Soto, Alejandro Otero, and Armando Reverón. It's an exhibition where you can get to know the work of these three very different artists.
I was already familiar with Reverón's work, so honestly, I went for him. However, I took the chance to enjoy the pieces by two major figures of kinetic art worldwide: Soto and Otero.
Desde que el Museo de la Cultura reabrió sus puertas hace unos años, la ciudad de Valencia (Venezuela) ha sido uno de los lugares clave para las artes plásticas.
Tuve la oportunidad de ver las obras de tres grandes exponentes del país: Jesús Soto, Alejandro Otero y Armando Reverón. Se trata de una exposición donde se puede conocer el trabajo de estos tres artistas tan diferentes.
La obra de Reverón ya la conocía, así que sinceramente fui por él. Sin embargo, aproveché para disfrutar el trabajo de dos grandes referentes del cinetismo en el mundo: Soto y Otero.
What is kinetic art? It's an art movement where the works appear to move to the viewer, varying depending on the vantage point.
I confess I'm not very knowledgeable about kinetic art, so I was in neophyte mode. I read the technical sheets to try and understand a bit more and better appreciate the art in their works.
Of course, I had my camera and took the opportunity to photograph the audience's reactions. I asked some if they knew Otero and Soto, and they did.
"They used to talk about them in school," a middle-aged woman replied. She was very knowledgeable about the subject, and seeing me with my camera, she approached me.
¿Qué es el cinetismo? Es una corriente del arte en la que las obras parecen tener movimiento para el espectador, variando según el punto desde el que se miren.
Confieso que no soy muy conocedor del cinetismo, así que estaba en modo neófito. Leía las fichas técnicas para tratar de entender un poco más y apreciar mejor el arte de sus obras.
Por supuesto, tenía mi cámara y aproveché para fotografiar las reacciones del público. A algunos les pregunté si conocían a Otero y Soto, y sí.
"En la escuela me hablaban de ellos", me respondió una señora de mediana edad. Ella sí conocía mucho del tema, y al verme con la cámara se me acercó.
"Are you an artist too?" she asked. To which I replied no. I just have a serious problem with labels.
Anyway, I continued my walk and ran into a photographer I know. We talked for a while about photography amidst the kinetic art. He was also photographing the exhibition.
I took a somewhat funny photo because I saw a mirror (it was a piece of art), and suddenly he appeared smiling, and I clicked the shutter.
We chatted for a while until we ran out of things to say, and he left. I continued my way, looking at the works carefully, connecting with some, and not with others because they didn't speak to me.
Finally, I went to see Reverón's works.
"¿También eres artista?", me preguntó. A lo que respondí que no. Y es que tengo un problema serio con las etiquetas.
En fin, seguí mi camino y me encontré a un fotógrafo que conozco. Estuvimos hablando un rato de fotografía en medio del cinetismo. Él también estaba fotografiando la exposición.
Tomé una foto un tanto graciosa porque vi un espejo (era una obra), y de repente apareció él sonriendo e hice clic en el obturador.
Estuvimos un rato conversando hasta que los temas se agotaron, y se fue. Yo seguí mi camino viendo las obras con detenimiento, conectando con algunas, y no con otras porque no me decían nada.
Finalmente, fui a ver las de Reverón.
Armando Reverón was a Venezuelan plastic artist who excelled in different artistic disciplines, including painting. One of his most striking works, let's say, are the famous rag dolls, but Reverón is more than that image. I don't know why he made them, but the truth is Reverón suffered from mental health issues. I even dare say that this artist was much more than his psychiatric problems.
The exhibition features works ranging from paintings from his different periods, the dolls I mentioned, and various objects he made.
It's interesting to see something made by a person who died quite a few years ago, but to see what was created with their hands is to find their legacy.
I believe that every human being, whether they want to or not, is destined to leave some kind of mark in the present, because in the end, we are just passing through, and life is very short.
Artists like these three left an indelible legacy in the history of Venezuelan and global art.
Seeing their works was inspiring, and regardless of whether I consider myself an artist or not, what matters is enjoying what I do. I believe that without that, everything is lost.
Armando Reverón fue un artista plástico venezolano que destacó en diferentes disciplinas artísticas, entre ellas la pintura. Una de sus obras más llamativas son las famosas muñecas de trapo, pero Reverón es más que esa imagen. Desconozco el porqué las hacía, pero lo cierto es que Reverón sufría de problemas mentales. Incluso me atrevo a decir que este artista era mucho más que sus problemas psiquiátricos.
En la exhibición hay obras que van desde pinturas de sus diferentes períodos, las muñecas que mencioné, y diferentes objetos que él hacía.
Es interesante ver algo hecho por una persona que murió hace ya bastantes años, pero ver aquello que fue creado con sus manos es encontrar su legado.
Creo que todo ser humano, quiera o no, está destinado a dejar algún tipo de huella en el presente, porque al final somos pasajeros y la vida es muy corta.
Artistas como ellos tres dejaron un legado imborrable en la historia del arte venezolano y también mundial.
Ver sus obras fue inspirador, e indiferentemente de si me considero artista o no, lo que importa es disfrutar de lo que hago. Creo que sin eso, se pierde todo.
